About the Author
Timothy J. Shannon teaches Early American, Native American, and British history at Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books, including Iroquois Diplomacy on the Early American Frontier (2008) and Indians and Colonists at the Crossroads of Empire: The Albany Congress of 1754 (2000), which won the Dixon Ryan Fox Prize from the New York State Historical Association and the Distinguished Book Award from the Society of Colonial Wars.� His articles have appeared in the William and Mary Quarterly, the New England Quarterly, and Ethnohisto.

This book is outstanding in every way and should be used in every college or school in America to try to teach students about the American phase of what Winston Churchill referred to as the first world war. Earlier generations have been deprived of, or not taken advantage of, the opportunity to learn about this most important and decisive war, which settled the score in many ways between France and England in America and elsewhere in the 18th century, and laid the foundation for the American Revolution. Use of the various source documents for the commentary is an extremely effective way to teach the subject, as well as, hopefully, to instill curiosity in the students to read other such documents to improve their understanding of this most important era and critically examine this period of our nation's history. This book is accurate, concise, and easily read and covers all topics from the French perspective, the complicated American Indian confederacies to Braddock's defeat, British campaigns and the seeds of Pontiac's rebellion. It thoroughly covers the subject with good references to continue learning about the events of this time, as well as to inspire students to learn about the related happenings in Europe which dominated the efforts of France to try to protect its interest there at the expense of the loss of New France. This book is not only useful for students in their studies, but for the rest of as as a ready reference and overall guide in our further reading of this era. About the Author

A patient-friendly guide to understanding pernicious anaemia

Pernicious anaemia (British spelling; PA) refers to reduced blood cells when the intestines cannot properly absorb vitamin B12 (due to a lack of intrinsic factor in gastric secretions). Since earlier studies showed that PA could be treated with vitamin B12, it is possible that this discovery, along with the availability of standard blood tests, may have led to the assumption that PA had been conquered (hence the reference to "The Forgotten Disease"). The author uses his own experience and those of others to illustrate that under- and misdiagnosis of this autoimmune disease are common occurrences. While many patients are only mildly inconvenienced by downstream symptoms such as excessive fatigue, other sufferers can experience life-changing neurological, hematological, and other consequences. Ultimately, the reader is taken on a refreshingly, jargon-free journey from the author's own diagnosis to joining forces with others in an attempt to understand the disease etiology, vitamin B12 sources, problems with diagnosis (using case studies), and treatment gaps. This book is an extremely helpful resource.

If you suffer from Pernicious Anemia/Vitamin B12 Deficiency then I highly recommend this book. It delves into the rollercoaster of misdiagnosis and unnecessary tests we often have to endure in order to get diagnosed and treated. It also explaines the differences in treatment, such as sublingual vitamins and self injection. Very Good Book!!

The need for early detection

As a researcher in pernicious anemia and vitamin B12 deficiency for over 30 years, I encourage others to read this book. Written from the heart, Mr. Hooper describes his personal experience with walking difficulties and mental symptoms and delays in diagnosis until finally pernicious anemia is discovered but too late to prevent full recovery with treatment. This story is common for pernicious anemia patients. There is a milder form of subclinical vitamin B12 (affecting millions in the USA) which can be just as deadly over time, leading to Alzheimer Disease and other neurological disability. The book contains valuable information such as a listing of common symptoms reported by members of the Pernicious Anemia Society. This work will benefit the public and medical professionals in encouraging early diagnosis and treatment of vitamin B12 deficiency thereby preventing permanent neurological disability. Eric J. This is a story about victory, not defeat. These episodes describe my personal struggle against an unseen enemy within, an enemy so ruthless that it almost destroyed my life. But by the grace of God and with the support of a loving, caring wife, the enemy is defeated. Life triumphs!
The reader should understand that mental illness is often not a continuous affliction. A person can be mentally ill for a time and then go into a remission that may last months or even years. During this period the individual may behave quite normally. Then, for no apparent reason, he/she can be plunged back into mental illness for an indefinite period.
For many years, I considered myself two separate beings. One me could be almost normal in thinking and behavior. This me was happy, ambitious, and enthusiastic most of the time. I liked this me!
The second me seemed almost another person. He thought thoughts that I did not want to think. He behaved in ways I did not want to behave. This me was a master at obliterating plans and dreams, a master at causing dreadful unhappiness. I hated this me! He was my enemy! This enemy controlled and dominated a vast portion of my life for over thirty years.

Once I had aspirations of becoming a medical doctor.
My illness dramatically changed the course of my life in every respect.

After graduation with a degree in biology from the University of North Texas, I applied to and was accepted by the University of Houston College of Optometry. This application and acceptance came after my dreams of becoming a physician had been crushed.
Then OCD changed my plans again, and my career goals took yet another direction. After several years of endless turmoil, constant struggle, and personal insecurity - years of searching for a way to use my education and feel a useful member of society - I decided to try my hand at teaching. Little did I know that this seeming compromise would become a fulfillment of many of my needs and aspirations.
I have been a classroom biology teacher for 23 years.�
Teaching has been an enormously fulfilling and richly rewarding career for me since I conquered mental illness fifteen years ago.

A small, skinny boy grew up on a cotton farm in deep South Texas; his story is one you will never forget... One crisp autumn night Reagan removed his clothes and shoes and crawled into his bed. A night light in the hall partially illuminated his room, and as he lay in bed, he noticed that his shoes weren't lined up perfectly side by side. Suddenly this began to bother him. Then he chastised himself thinking that it was silly that this would worry him. Nothing like this had ever upset him before. He realized that he was experiencing another abnormal thought, and this realization frightened him. He tried to go to sleep, but he couldn't stop thinking about those shoes. He felt an overpowering urge to get out of bed and line them up exactly beside each other. He tried to resist the thought, but the harder he resisted, the more commanding the thought became.
He wished that he could just forget the shoes and go to sleep. He could not. He was a prisoner of his own thinking. After an hour of torment, the boy timidly crawled out of bed and straightened his shoes. In a way, he felt relief; yet he also felt defeated. He had surrendered again to thoughts he knew to be irrational.
Reagan was becoming aware that something very wrong was happening to him. He knew he dared not tell anyone. He wondered if he was going crazy! Why would a person feel compelled to do things he did not really want to do?
He knew that crazy people were locked up in insane asylums, some for the remainder of their lives. He thought that, if he told someone what he had been experiencing, there was a chance he would be taken to one of those horrible places where people were put in straitjackets and given shock therapy. He could not risk it. He could never tell.
He didn't dare let anyone discover his abnormal behavior - his craziness - his growing insanity...

Excellent!

This is the best book I have read so far regarding OCD. Most other books talk about washing, checking or hoarding but Smith's book showed me that there's a lot more to OCD. I was impressed by the author's honesty and found his writing style enjoyable. I am not a Christian myself but this book remains my favourite OCD book. It taught me more about OCD than any other book. Thank you Reagan.
