They have hired a housekeeper named Matilde, an aspiring comedian from Brazil who's more interested in coming up with the perfect joke than in house-cleaning. Lane, the lady of the house, has an eccentric sister named Virginia who's just nuts about house-cleaning. She and Matilde become fast friends, and Virginia takes over the cleaning while Matilde works on her jokes. Trouble comes when Lane's husband Charles reveals that he has found his soul mate, or "bashert" in a cancer patient named Anna, on whom he has operated. The actors who play Charles and Anna also play Matilde's parents in a series of dream-like memories, as we learn the story about how they literally killed each other with laughter, giving new meaning to the phrase, "I almost died laughing". This theatrical and wildly funny play is a whimsical and poignant look at class, comedy and the true nature of love.

Ruhl's Quirky and Brilliant Voice At Its Best

Sarah Ruhl is emerging as an important voice in contemporary theater, and anyone who has read one of her scripts or seen a production of her work can understand why. Her voice is quirky and refreshing, and yet it doesn't become a gimmick or lose itself by being unrelatable. Cleanliness, the subject of this work, weaves its way through the lives of the characters as they struggle with family and relationships, grief, and the meaning of true love.

The two main characters, Lane and Virginia, are sisters with very different ideas about cleaning. The play opens with Lane talking about her Brazillian housekeeper, Matilde, who has given up trying to clean. Lane is infuriated; a successful doctor, she makes it clear that she did not go to medical school and work all of the hours that she has worked just to clean her own house. For her, cleaning is menial work, beneath her. Virginia on the other hand can't believe that anyone would give up cleaning their own house. How do you know progress, she asks the audience, if you don't know how quickly dust accumulates under your bed. For Virginia, cleaning is a refuge from the "dirtiness" of everyday living, of a world that isn't perfect and certainly isn't fair.

There are other characters and complex interactions, but the heart of this show is Lane's depressed housekeeper, Matilde. Determined to become a comedian and write the perfect joke, she is haunted by memories of her parents: her mother "died laughing" (because if you've heard the perfect joke, why would you continue to live?) and her father killed himself directly after. Her attempts to construct witty and ribald jokes, usually in her native tongue, are humarous; their juxtaposition with her memories of her parents and their magical love are heart-breaking. Matilde is one of the great tragic characters of contemporary theater.

Fans of magical realism will enjoy the playful use of space: actions on a balcony (imagined as another apratment) affect the characters below and disembodied words appear on the walls (translations of jokes, explanatory words, etc). Though not as spectacular as the staging of Ruhl's other great work EURYDICE (it's hard to compete with an elevator car filled with rain), the interplay between spaces helps reinforce the actions and consequences of characters and their decisions.

I would heartily recommend anything written by Ruhl, but this one is a special treat. Though not as emotionally-impactful as EURYDICE, it is a tender and often surprising meditation on love, and all of the clean and dirty emotions that it entails.

Ruhl Does Not Disappoint

I really enjoyed Clean House! Ruhl's writing is easy to follow, and I love the simplicity of her writing. Her stage directions are also great, something that Ruhl is famous for. I like the simplicity of the comedy and would definitely recommend reading this play!

I love this edition of the play, although I believe I did detect a few typos. The pages are easy to turn and the formatting makes it very easy to read. I had no idea Samuel French published plays in this style. And it's a great play! Very original and funny.

it will change the way you look at the world

[What follows is an extract from two essays published at Rationally Speaking dot org; check also a forthcoming episode of the Rationally Speaking podcast featuring an interview with James Ladyman.] I must admit that the title of the first chapter -- "In defense of scientism" -- did not dispose me well toward the book. I think the term scientism ought to be reserved for what it has traditionally indicated, an unwarranted over reliance on science (yes, there is such a thing), or the thoughtless application of science where it doesn't belong (ditto), and it pisses me off to no end when philosophers actually use it as a positive term (as, most egregiously, in Alex Rosenberg's so-called Atheist's Guide to Reality). However, I got past the initial annoyance, and started to appreciate the (complex) arguments made by Ladyman, Ross and their occasional co-writers. Indeed, by the end of the book it turns out that Every Thing Must Go is, among other things, a pretty good argument against the sort of scientism that worries me, and in particular against the nowadays very popular physical reductionism espoused by the likes of Rosenberg, Harris & co. ... The surprising upshot of all of this is that physicalist reductionism -- the idea that all the special sciences and their objects of study will eventually reduce to physics and its objects of study -- is out of the question. And it is out of the question because of a metaphysics (ontic structural realism) that is based on the best physics available! If you are not blown away by this you may not have caught the thing in its entirety and may want to go back and re-read this post (or, if your philosophical and physical chops are adequate, ETMG). This has all sorts of implication for those increasingly popular (and, I think, annoying) statements about determinism and reductionism that we keep hearing. Turns out that they are based on bad physics and worse metaphysics. There is no fundamental determinism for the simple reason that there is no fundamental causality, and that "cause" is a conceptual tool deployed by the special sciences that has no counterpart in fundamental physics, and so it cannot be reduced to or eliminated by the latter. In other words, read the book, it's definitely worth your time!

like most metaphysical discussions

Anybody interested in the foundational importance of physics for doing metaphysics should read this book. My only complaint is that, like most metaphysical discussions, the presentation is a bit tedious at times. Nevertheless, Ladyman et.al. manage to make a strong case that all metaphysics must be anchored in fundamental physics if it is to have any probative value.

Ontic Structural Realism

Ladyman and Ross provide an account of ontic structural realism (OSR) with some new concepts and arguments that Ladyman and Franch have not included in their previous articles. OSR challenges the traditional ontology of "things" or "stuff" and adds freshness to the metaphysical debates. The book is an essential reading for those interested in the philosophy of science and philosophy of mathematics. OSR is still very controversial but it exposes some problems with traditional metaphysics.

Among the difficulties of OSR is its view that only the mathematical structure can be known and that it is all what exist, i.e., nothing exists in the real world other than the structure. Even particles like electrons or photons do not exist as real relata but are devices meant to attain knowledge of the structure. The idea that the relational structure has no relata (entities between which there can be relations) is counterintuitive, and has been ruthlessly criticized. So far the proponents of OSR could not clarify their contention that the mathematical structure is also physical. In spite of the inadequacy of arguments for OSR, the position remains interesting and bold.

If you never read the material at the front of your books anyway, and if you’re in a hurry to begin and only want to read one paragraph, here it is:

Most chapters in this book are independent. Start with any one and look through it. Use the index extensively. Decide if you are going to work problems in that topic. If so, solve as many problems in that topic as time allows. Don’t stop studying until the exam. Start right now! Quickly! Good luck.

However, if you want to begin a thorough review, you should probably try to find out everything there is to know about the PE exam. The rest of this Introduction is for you.

IF YOU ARE A PRACTICING ENGINEER

If you are a practicing engineer and have obtained this book as a general reference handbook, it will probably sit in your bookcase until you have a specific need.

However, if you are preparing for the PE examination in environmental engineering, the following suggestions may help.

Find out the current edition of this book. You might be reading this book long after it was published. Newer editions mean that older editions are no longer appropriate for the current exam. Newer editions mean that the codes, standards, and regulations on which the exam is based are not represented in the older edition, that the exam body of knowledge has changed, and/ or the exam format and policies have changed. New editions are published for a reason, and it’s not reasonable for you to expect the older edition to serve your needs when it is out of date.

FOR NON-UNDERGRADUTE ENGINEERS

My undergraduate was in Geography. My Masters in Environmental Engineering. I am not good at math, and formulas with greek letters still make me tense inside. Having said this, here are the books you need to concentrate on to pass this exam the first time.
1. This book. It needs to be your centerpiece, your touchstone. You need to know this book, and especially the tables and appendices. Location, Location, Location is so important, know where everything is in this book. Make this book part of your life. Travel with it, sit with it, take it on your 10 minute coffee breaks... just know this book.
2. Next: 101 Solved Engineering Problems. This book has the most realistic PE Problems. Do them all. They are categorized by type so you must write the page from Lindeberg next to the problem in this book for quick cross reference. This is your best book for quickly finding an example of what you are trying to solve on the test.
3. Next: Lindeberg Practice Problems. Also good, but not as good as 101 (above). Use this as a reference. It aligns with the Lindeberg Hard Cover for quick cross reference.
4. Last: Environmental Engineering Practice Exams (Schneiter). Do all the problems. It looks like a Lindeberg, but it isn't. Like 101 Solved Problems, you must cross-reference the problems with there topic location in Lindeberg Hard Cover. Questions are not in a particular order (4 practice exams, level about right), but questions are in random order which makes look-up during exam tough.
5. Environmental Law Handbook (Sullivan). Need this for the regulatory, and statutory questions. Find a good OSHA book too.
6. Last: Environmental Engineering Calculations (Lee & Lin). This book is expensive and big, but it is a good fail safe. What I liked about it is it presented things differently than Lindeberg, in case I didn't understand where Lindeberg was coming from.
7. I HATE CONVERSIONS, and the test is full of them. If you hate conversions, buy Lindeberg's Engineering Conversions. It is a time saver.
You do not have time to use even all of these references. Just don't show up with a heck of a lot more. You need to drill, drill, drill, on the problems so when you see them on the PE, it is like regurgatation. Lindeberg Hard Cover will covers everything you need to know... this book is your centerpiece!

2nd Edition is Worse than 1st Edition

I borrowed my boss' first edition of this book before I bought the second edition. After reviewing each in good detail, it's clear that they are exactly the same content, except for one thing: the 2nd edition has no problems at the end of each chapter. Obviously the publisher wants you to buy the companion problems book. So, to be clear: the 2nd edition is worse than the 1st edition. Even by textbook industry standards, that's pretty bad!

Yet, you need this book for the PE. So buy a gently used copy of the first edition and you'll both save money and get a superior product.

Primary reference for PE exam

I took three books to the Environmental PE exam - this one, the Civil Engineering reference, and the provided (downloadable) FE reference book. The Environmental PE exam was 100 questions. I used the Environmental reference for about 75 of the questions. I needed the Civil Reference for about 15 questions. I needed the FE reference for two of the questions. There were about 8 questions where I did not know where to look for the formulae, so had to guestimate.

The goal of humanitarian organizations is obviously to relieve suffering, but their work is also shaped by politics and other ideological considerations. Morris chronicles the establishment and early years of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the influence of the ideas and practices about aid to children and mothers inherited from its predecessor charities, the Commission for Relief in Belgium and Save the Children, as well as the emergence of the Cold War. The leadership of the first executive director, Maurice Pate; the roles of Dr. Martha Eliot and other personnel; interactions with related agencies, such as the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Health Organization; and efforts to support US foreign policy in Europe to secure crucial funding are explored. After achieving success in the immediate postwar period with relief programs, including supplemental feeding, clothing distribution, and vaccinations and other medical care, UNICEF gained permanent status within the UN in 1953 and shifted its focus to international development programs geared to children while continuing to provide aid to them in regions affected by conflict. HORRIBLE BOOK

I purchased this for my Kindle thinking Ms. Jones may have done something right. Was I ever wrong! This book is convulted and jumbled. The characters make very little sense. I don't mind the sex, what I do mind is wasting money on something that gave me absolutely no enjoyment. Spellbinding.....no! Couldn't put it down........YES! Even though it is a short book, it took me a week to read it and I'm a fast reader. I couldn't delete it from my Kindle fast enough. If you MUST read this, don't pay for it. Check it out from your local library (if they actually have it).

I have been reading for a long time and I remember, in the 80's, where there was a trend towards writing books that were a little bit trashy, with a lot of sex, but were also incredibly entertaining.

This is what I was hoping for with Satan's Sisters.

Firstly, I have no problem with a novel with a lot of sex - if it is entertaining and remotely pertinent to the plotline.

Secondly, I did not expect Star Jones to be a high literary author.

Having said all of this, I found this book to be convoluted, silly and most importantly, boring, boring, boring.

As soon as I started reading the first few pages, my first thought was "I guess she is not going to go out on a limb here and write something a little daring". It was obvious, by her opening chapter about a "bunch of women who host a daytime show" that we were simply going to be reading about Jones' distorted(?)view of her own importance and I was not mistaken.

From the get go, I found the characters completely confusing and I just could not figure out why this plotline should be even more remotely interesting to me.

The writing was silly, the characters were silly and the entire book was silly - I even hated the title. This one is a big no for me.

This is one of the worst books I have ever read, and I am an avid reader. Star needs to leave the writing business and make a stab at something else. I couldn't wait to finish it. Those great reviews, must be done by Star herself. She needs to put the venom away and realize that it is time to move on. This book was a real mess.
