amusing contemporary romance

After her half-sister Laurel steals her boyfriend, upset and humiliated Jamie Newman leaves New York to spend the summer at a nice cottage on Seaside Cove, North Carolina away from her dependent family. There she plans to renew her batteries and look at where her life is going starting with ridding herself of her drama queen mom, Laurel and her niece as well as managing the family restaurant.

However, her pleasant bungalow turns out to be a dump. Worse the horde she left in New York followed her to the barrier island as the three females plead with Jamie to rectify their issues. Meanwhile Jamie is attracted to her annoying cottage landlord Nick Trent. He wants a summer fling with his renter who will return to New York so he can hide his past from the woman he desires.

This is an amusing contemporary romance due to a strong cast. The lead couple is a nice pairing who brings an engaging romantic subplot with a touch of intrigue re his secret to the mix. However, her family of Three Stoogettes provides an eccentric jocularity yet also contains a serious theme that focuses on the emotional dependency of the trio on the problem fixer who is a codependent with her need to be needed. This is a wonderful family drama.

Summer at Seaside Cove - A Joyfully Recommended Title

Jamie Newman has had it! She is constantly taking care of everyone else and falling into things without ever really doing what she wants to do. She has dreams and goals, but since she takes care of all around her she hasn't realized any of them. Finding out that her skinnier, materialistic, OLDER half-sister, Laurel, has been cheating with her current beau is the last straw! Reeling from this bitter betrayal Jamie takes a long overdue vacation to Seaside Cove to reassess, regroup and just find herself. Paradise Lost was supposed to be a cutesy cheap rental, but upon arrival she finds a run-down, in-desperate-need-of-renovation rental that smells as though something crawled inside it and died, was revived, and then died again! Feeling as though if she didn't have bad luck she wouldn't have any luck at all, she finds solace in the only salvageable thing in her dreary world. A bottle of vodka in the freezer! Jamie sits up in her leaky rental, staring out the window all night, and waiting for her landlord to return from his latest bender - only now she looks and smells like she has been on a bender!

Nicholas Trent never realized that the realtor he used to list his property did a bait and switch with internet pictures in order to get a renter. He believed Jamie was embellishing a story and he wasn't too thrilled to find her on his porch bright and early the next morning demanding restitution in some form. Nick found Jamie to be bossy and demanding and felt she was a princess from New York who just couldn't be bothered with "roughing" it. But man she did something to him and he found himself unable to fight his growing attraction to her. Wanting to spend time with her over the summer vacation, but afraid to tell her the complete truth about himself; he glosses over his past leaving out much of the details and just gets to know her in the present.

Summer at Seaside Cove was a breathtaking story with likeable characters that had so much chemistry bubbling between them that you just wanted to watch them mix it up! I have to say Summer at Seaside Cove started off slow, but the minute Nick Trent answered that door in unbuttoned Levi's and bedhead (he had me then and I didn't care if he was on a bender the night before!) and I was prepared to watch the show! Of course Jamie's problems follow her, but they were so funny. Who would have thought that her 46-year-old mother would have a FWB (friends with benefits)? One who is younger and has managed to knock her up too - can you say cougar? Who would have imagined that Jamie's niece would have made her way down to the rental just to be with her loving aunt because she doesn't have that type of relationship with her mother? And let's not forget the lovely betrayer, Laurel. Even she shows up looking to make amends and give explanations for her behavior. The cast of characters in this book are quite enjoyable to read about; they are very friendly and open with their own beliefs and idiosyncrasies and just add more to Summer at Seaside Cove.

Summer at Seaside Cove's flirty dialogue and sexual innuendo is sizzling! I couldn't wait for Nick and Jamie to "hook up" and see how hot their sparks can glow. I never would have imagined that there could be sexual connotations with a nail and a screw - as in building supplies. But there is and I tell you, it had me chuckling. I loved the explanation of "Oh bless your heart" as well. That is a good little phrase to use, but now we are on to you! When Nick offered to show her his if she shows him hers when he catches her staring at something she should not be looking at, (oh my) you could just feel her cheeks flush; perhaps because we have all been there at one time or another. I also liked Nick's insight of being a puppet. I know Jamie didn't like it at first, but I think she came to realize that it was true. So I would have to say that Jacquie D'Alessandro applied some hard truths into Summer at Seaside Cove that readers can actually apply to their lives. That helped to make this story even more rewarding, at least for me.

I have to say that I really didn't care about Nick's past because he was just so hot and distracting when he interacted with Jamie. Usually you want to know about the character's background, but because of the great chemistry and camaraderie, in Summer at Seaside Cove you really didn't care! The past was definitely the past and you lived for the present and the future in Summer at Seaside Cove. I couldn't wait for these two to give into their physical attraction and end this dance because I just knew it will be like the fourth of July in book form!

I did have one complaint about Summer at Seaside Cove though. I felt that perhaps Jamie should have taken a little more time and Laurel should have had to grovel a bit more for forgiveness. Laurel's explanation spoke of jealousy, which was a copout on Laurel's behalf, and had taken time to form and yet, I felt as though Jamie had harbored some jealousy of her own as well. Because of this explanation it made it harder to believe that Laurel could just let something that had been festering for years go in a month! Of course the thorn comes before the rose, but it makes it that much more painful when the thorn is your half-sister! So yeah Jamie had a bit of suffering in order to find her HEA. I know what Jacquie D'Alessandro was getting at about forgiving someone and letting go of the hate, but I think it should have taken more time. Perhaps in the next book we will see that Laurel actually had to work harder at regaining the ground she lost with her half-sister because of her betrayal. I Joyfully Recommend Summer at Seaside Cove for the above reasons and so many more!

Funny, enjoyable

I have never read any of Ms. D'Alessandro's books, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Did not want to put it down and I'm very disappointed that the sequel will not be available until 2012. The characters are engaging and fun, the book didn't have a lot of draggy moments, it stayed pretty well on track and a surprise happened regularly with the continual appearance of family members she was trying to take a break from. I found the story to be amusing and funny. I think this is one of those books you just hate to see end.

A must read!

This is a terrific book to add to the family bookshelf; both parents and children will enjoy and benefit from it. My family learned some bits of history we hadn't known before. We were also moved by many stories in the book; some will certainly stick with us. I also loved the discussion questions, which really made my kids think.

NOTE: Parents should be aware that "the red light district" and suicide (Hitler's) are mentioned. Also, the author says that we will not hear God's voice with our ears. While this is often true, the Bible itself tells us that sometimes people do hear God with their ears.

PRAYERS THAT CHANGED HISTORY is about famous people who became famous because of a simple prayer. People like Christopher Columbus and Helen Keller achieved what they wanted to because they asked God to help them. I really liked this book and read it through in two days. It is very well-written and held my interest. I really like that they included the prayers and quotes in the exact words they said it in the book.

Other features include a brief biography, something to think about, in his own words, its in the Bible, and How he changed history.

Highly recommended for everyone. Even my older brother is enthralled by this book. He says it is astounding

I fell in love with this book, its a Godsend!!!

I love, love, love this book. I bought it to use during homeschool to teach my kids the importance of prayer and how you can move mountains with the faith of a mustard seed. I fell in love with it!! Not only does it teach history and reading, it teaches the children that some of the greatest events in history happened because of someone spending time on their knees with the Lord. It reminds you that prayer is a powerful thing and not to be taken for granted and that praying every day and reading God's word can not only strengthen your relationship with him but it can change the course of history and your life...I would recommend this book for anyone young or old!!!

Text has very good exercise and problem material. Each exercise is somewhat focused on a specific issue or question rather than trying to cover all possible complex derivations of the issue or concept in one case problem.

My class members frequently commented that they like reading about the reason why accounting procedures were done. They felt that many "unknown" or "assumptions" presented in the introductory courses were solved when they read the intermediate text. They actually enjoyed reading the book and wished that these same authors could have written their intro text!

I have used the virtual community web site and found it extremely timely and useful. The support people were extremely helpful. The approach to material and topical arrangement, end of chapter cases, and business context items were also strengths I found with this text.

I am extremely satisfied with this text. This is the fourth Intermediate text I have used and this is by far the best. I really like how the chapters are ordered. Also, the end of chapter materials are super.

About the Author
K. Fred Skousen holds the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Chair of Management and is Dean of the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. He earned a bachelor's degree from BYU and master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Illinois. Dr. Skousen taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Minnesota prior to joining the faculty at Brigham Young University. In 1983 Dr. Skousen was awarded the Peat Marwick Professorship at BYU. In 1984 Dr. Skousen was elected to the AICPA Council, and in 1985 he received the UACPA Outstanding Faculty Award. Dr. Skousen has been a consultant to the Financial Executive Research Foundation, the Controller General of the United States, the Federal Trade Commission, and to several large companies. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of several corporations. Dr. Skousen is the author or co-author of more than 50 articles, research reports, and books, including Intermediate Accounting, 13th edition. Fred and his wife, Julie, have five sons, one daughter, and nineteen grandchildren.

James D. Stice is the Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. He is currently the Director of the Marriott School's MBA Program. He holds bachelors and master's degrees from BYU and a Ph.D. from the University of Washington, all in accounting. Professor Stice has been on the faculty at BYU since 1988. During that time, he has been selected by graduating accounting students as "Teacher of the Year" on numerous occasions, he was selected by his peers in the Marriott School at BYU to receive the "Outstanding Teaching Award" in 1995, and in 1999 he was selected by the University to receive its highest teaching award, the Maeser Excellence in Teaching Award. Professor Stice is also a visiting professor for INSEAD's MBA Program in France. Professor Stice has published articles in The Journal of Accounting Research, The Accounting Review, Decision Sciences, Issues in Accounting Education, The CPA Journal, and other academic and professional journals. In addition to this textbook, he has published two other textbooks: Financial Accounting: Reporting and Analysis, and Accounting: Concepts and Applications. In addition to his teaching and research, Dr. Stice has been involved in executive education for such companies as IBM, Bank of America, and Ernst & Young and currently serves on the board of directors of Nutraceutical Corporation. Dr. Stice and his wife, Kaye, have seven children: Crystal, J.D., Ashley, Whitney, Kara, Skyler, and Cierra.

Earl K. Stice is the PricewaterhouseCoopers Professor of Accounting in the School of Accountancy at Brigham Young University, where he has been on the faculty since 1998. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees from Brigham Young University and a PhD from Cornell University.

James D. Stice is the Distinguished Teaching Professor in the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University. He is currently Associate Dean of the Marriott School. Dr. Stice served for eight years as the director of BYU's MBA Program. He holds bachelor's and master's degrees in accounting from BYU and a PhD in accounting from the University of Washington.

Easy to understand

I purchased this book because the textbook we are using is not that great. I only read a few chapters, but so far this book explains the material in a very clear, easy to understand and comprehensive manner. I highly recommend it!!!

An excellent accounting text

Layout and presentation of topics are in a logical order. Text is clearly written, and explains the why and how, using examples from annual reports, news articles, and historical information. Complicated topics, such as pension accounting and disclosure, are presented first with a simple example to give you the background you need. Then the authors progress to the more complicated and real world aspects of the topic.

An understandable, well written accounting "classroom"

I own the 15th edition (Pub. 2004). I purchased it because I had read the reviews (here) of the various "Intermediates" and knew that some were difficult reads. Not so with this one. I also knew that my wife and I have had positive experiences with Thompson Learning, and felt that this would PROBABLY be my best bet. T'was so.

The additional tidbits in the margins add illustration to the text. The authors have made an effort to allow me to see the practical world of accounting outside the learning environment, something I desperately need as a distance learning student. Related issues within the financial world are brought into the application of accounting, and give a larger picture of how accounting fits into it.

The chapter on statement of cash flows helped me immensely in understanding the subject where my fundamental course failed.

The only item I've noticed is a bit of redundancy in the Earnings Management chapter with the Revenue Recognition chapter regarding the subjective nature of the income statement preparation, and possible abuses of that. Since there are plenty of examples of abuses, it would seem over emphasis of tha t subject is appropriate.

I wholeheartedly recommend this particular edition to students going into intermediate accounting.

Perfect read for the festive season...

Hazel's twin sister, Lila, is getting married and asks Lila to be her wedding planner. Hazel was always the tomboy while her sister was into sparkles and ballet, but Hazel has a talent for picking just the right venue, food and extras. Lila's wedding is perfect and Hazel finds herself in demand. With a new flatmate and new career option, all is well in Hazel's world. There is one thing missing though. Her best friend, Sam. They grew up together and were like two peas in a pod, until last Christmas, when Hazel tried to kiss him. Since then, contact has been lost and she misses his presence. Watching all her clients, loved-up and ready to embark on their married lives, she feels a bit lonely. Is is case of always the wedding planner, never the bride?

Abby Clements has written a novel full of festiveness. Hazel is a sweetheart, who would do anything for anyone and makes the perfect wedding planner. Calm, concise and enthusiastic, without being brash or bossy. Her love of food wafts of the pages and similarly, the Christmas season is brought to life as the book approaches its end. The couples planning their wedding couldn't be more different yet Hazel deals with them all in a general way. There's no need for drama or meltdowns when Hazel is around. She misses her twin sister when she moves out to get married but new flatmate, Amber, more than makes up it. She is a whiz in the kitchen and is always there to brighten up Hazel's day. The only thing is, she has started dating Sam...

This is a wonderful, easy read. You can tell the author adores all things Christmassy and all the reader needs to do is sit back, relax and picture the cakes, the dresses and the atmosphere. No invitation required. An ideal read for over the holidays.

Review: 'The Winter Wedding' by Abby Clements

Hazel works at a TV production company and she knows a promotion must be coming her way soon, especially after all her hard work. Now her twin sister Lila has moved out of their London apartment, Hazel can definitely use the money. But when the promotion is unexpectedly given to someone else, Hazel realises she needs to find another way to pay the rent, next to finding a new roommate. When her sister Lila and her fiancee Ollie ask Hazel to plan their wedding, Hazel ends up enjoying it so much, she decides to become a wedding planner. But dealing with couples about to get married is not as easy as it seems, especially not when your own love life suddenly starts to take its own surprising course as well...

Another simply amazing read by Abby Clements and one that brings together so many topics I love: from sisterly bonds to friendship to baking to Christmas to weddings to romance... 'The Winter Wedding' is a fantastic read which I enjoyed from start to finish and can't recommend enough to any chick lit fans out there. I'm a big of Abby Clements' writing; it almost felt like I was flying through the pages. I loved the relatively short chapters and didn't at one point feel like putting the novel down. It held my attention throughout and I just wanted to finish it, seeing what would happen to the different characters and how the various storylines would eventually be brought to a close.

I really liked Hazel, the main character in the book. She was easy to like, just like all the great secondary characters, such as Hazel's twin sister Lila, her colleague Josh, and her new roommate Amber, who each had something to bring to the story. If I have to think of one thing I would change about this novel, I would add a bit more Christmas and festive cheer, but that's the only thing. I am sad I finished the book so quickly and would love to have a new Abby Clements novel waiting for me, so hopefully her next release will be upon us soon. Overall, 'The Christmas Wedding' is an uplifting, heartwarming, well-written chick lit read; perfect to curl up with on a cold winter day (or any other day of the year, really)!

One of my all-time winter favorites

Hazel has a creative job at a TV production company and is being promised a promotion. She needs the money, because her sister Lila has just moved out of their apartment and she can't afford to stay there on her own. Hazel and Lila are twins, they have always been close, but their personalities are very different. Lila is a ballet dancer who's still waiting for her big break. She has found the love of her life and she and Ollie want to get married as soon as possible. When their wedding planner cancels Lila asks Hazel if she wants to plan her wedding. Hazel loves doing something this meaningful for her sister and she does it well, so well that she's being asked to plan another wedding. And another one... She's great at looking after other couples, but what about Hazel's own love life?

The Winter Wedding is such a wonderful story. It's perfect to read on a cold winter evening. This book has everything I love; sisters, cake, creative main characters, romance, weddings and friendship. I started reading as soon as it landed in my mailbox and I read it in one sitting. The story enchanted me and I couldn't put it away. I love the way Abby Clements writes her novels, they're sweet and vivid with main characters the readers will love immediately.There's always a lot going on and the stories are fast-paced, but they also have a dreamy quality which makes them soft and smooth at the same time.

Abby Clements writes books I really love. I've read all of her books and highly recommend each of them. The Winter Wedding is another great one. I enjoyed reading this story very much. I especially loved how Abby Clements manages to make Hazel's creations come to life and how Lila is almost dancing off the pages. It was like I could see them and it's clear there's a lot of vision behind those scenes, that's why I enjoyed that aspect of the story the most. I'm definitely going to read this book again, it's already one of my all-time winter favorites.
