Being a small business owner of 20 years, I was truly impressed with how much I learned throughout every chapter of this book.
Tom Abbott takes you through 21 steps to improved your business, sales and yourself in such a smooth conversational tone that it makes this book a pleasure to read.

An excellent personal coach for salespeople

I spent quite a few years using the Beyond Selling Value approach (book by Mark Shonka and Dan Kosch) to help salespeople improve their approach and avoid the "vendor trap". So I couldn't help comparing The SOHO Solution to this book while I read it.

I definitely prefer The SOHO Solution.

First, Tom Abbott doesn't pad the book. Salespeople are busy, and it always felt to me that Shonka and Kosch overwrote their book. Abbott's book says what's necessary, and doesn't waste your time.

Abbott also writes in an extremely engaging way, including good stories about his own trials and errors and successes during his decade-long development of his sales coaching business. He's not spouting theory. He's explaining practice, and he does so in a very open, friendly manner. And with his book he's actually coaching you, as each chapter ends with a task for the week (all of which are very doable, not at all intimidating, and inclined to make you feel "How can I have waited so long to do this?". It's not a book to read in one sitting, but rather a companion for your own personal 21-week course.

The two books have somewhat different target readers, and this has to be taken into account. BSV is designed for people who already have sales strategies but are finding them unproductive. SOHO is designed to help people grow their small business. As such, SOHO spends a lot of time making sure that small business owners understand the questions they need to be asking themselves about their own business, about their niche, about the industries that will be their best target markets, and about how they can differentiate themselves from their competition. BSV really focuses on the questions salespeople need to ask in order to understand their prospects. They place a great amount of emphasis on pre-meeting research into the prospective client, and offer detailed advice on the dozens and dozens of things to consider in an effort to sell to a key decision-maker. Abbott briefly mentions the need to do research on a prospect, while BSV goes into extreme detail. What Abbott does is take a more emotional approach, talking about how the sales process feels to the prospect, and how to make sure that what is happening fits both the values and the businesses of the buyer and the seller.

Both books offer help with scripting calls and helpful language for developing a partnership. What I like about Abbott's approach is that he trusts you to think for yourself. This is what his tasks are all about. It's not spoon-feeding at all, but rather offering the opportunity to think it through and come up with your own way to represent your business. He's a coach as well as a salesman, after all.

BSV talks about the business fit and the solution fit. SOHO talks about how to sell the benefits of your product or service rather than just the features, since people buy benefits. It's great that Abbott spends a good deal of time (but, as I said, not too much) on this important concept, since salespeople everywhere are still going on sales calls and basically saying "Here are our super products and all the things they have and do. They're really cool. Don't you want to buy them?" Since you can't get someone to buy a benefit unless you can make sure it's a benefit that fits their business, then it's clear that asking questions is key. Abbott suggests that asking questions during the first call and the first meeting will be the way to start the relationship off. He also suggests developing a self-assessment document that prospects can fill out. He talks about the difference between relational selling and transactional selling in a helpful way too. (BSV wants you to do massive amounts of research before the call to the decision-maker. Which does make sense too.)

Because SOHO is focused on small businesses, Abbott knows there can be challenges in terms of process and organization. This is one of the ways this book really stands out. Abbott spends a whole chapter on helping small business owners think through the best way to organize their prospecting information and progress. Remarkably, he also spends a chapter on communication and adapting your style to the buyer. The thinking he employs is similar to DISC, and his concise description of how to communicate with different types will no doubt help a lot of people. There's also emphasis near the end of the book on soliciting and using feedback in order to continue improving. How many busy business owners forget the importance of this?

The one area that Abbot doesn't spend much time on, and where BSV goes into great detail, is ways to get around gatekeepers. Shonka and Kosch seem to be targeting large companies who sell to large companies, but the advice applies to small business as well (we want to sell to big companies too!). Gatekeepers are everywhere in the marketplace, and can make it really difficult to get meetings with key decision-makers.

I still give The SOHO Solution an unreserved five stars, though. It's such an enjoyable read, and there's no doubt in my mind that following the weekly tasks will lead to a much more flourishing business for any reader.

Action plan for sales success!

This is a fantastic book on growing small businesses! The 21 Selling Strategies in the book pretty much nail all the things I need to do to grow my business. What I particularly liked is the layout of the content into a weekly action plan. The action plan takes the pressure off and helps me to zero-in on one aspect of my business at one time. I am very impressed by the content in the book - from discovering your niche to qualifying prospects, from discovering ways to reach customers to studying the competitors, from sales scripts to closing techniques! Each week's strategy is packed with powerful techniques and ends with specific action plan. This is a great book and written in simple language! If you own a business and want to take it to the next level, you will find this book VERY useful.

Best book available on Astrodynamics

This is hands down the best book available on the subject of Astrodynamics. Over the years, I have read and owned several books on the subject but Vallado has an approach that is easy to understand. His use of practical examples provide built in test cases for application of the subject matter. A must have book for anyone interested in the subject.

One of the best

Coming to orbital mechanics from a celestial mechanics point of view, I didn't want to like this book. However, I would have to say that this is possibly the best orbital mechanics book available at this time. His derivations are some of the easiest to follow and most complete of any text. He does not gloss over intermediate steps in them. His discussions of perturbations are the most detailed I have seen. He gives considerable historical background and introduction to many chapters, enough so that you can pick up the thread of historical literature if you so desire. The book was published just as the new IAU 2000 frame of reference was being introduced, and it does cover that, as well as older FK5 and other systems. Pseudo-code algorithms are followed by worked examples, which is great for those of us who want to actually apply some of the theory. Of course, the book is Earth-satellite specific, so it is slanted toward that rather than celestial mechanics, but in some respects this is a plus. A great deal of modern, computerized analysis of satellite orbits is readily applicable to celestial mechanics, and Vallado covers it well. Other things are of less interest to a celestial mechanician - modelling of Earth's atmosphere and so forth, but this is still interesting. I have some minor nits: he uses the "little angular hat" vector notation rather than the bolded-character notation, which I prefer. Vallado writes in a folksy, first-persony sort of style, which is different than the almost pompous tone one gets in many celestial mechanics texts. As I said, minor.

Editor Tucker is also the editor of�encyclopedias on the two world wars and the cold war, among other works. The 750 alphabetically arranged and signed entries are accurate and balanced. They cover individuals, events, groups and organizations, places, ideas, movements, technologies, objects, artifacts, treaties, and other topics. Examples are the Al-Aqsa Mosque massacre, Al Jazeera news agency, Mohammad Naguib (first president of Egypt), and the 2007 siege of the Nahr al Bared refugee camp in Lebanon.�Although the focus is on the Arab-Israeli wars from 1947, many entries, such�the one for the Ottoman Empire,�help achieve a balance between historical and contemporary context.�The work is strengthened by references at the end of each entry, see also and cross-references, birth and death dates in biographical entries, line-drawn maps, and black-and-white photos. About the Author

Spencer C. Tucker, PhD, is Senior Fellow of Military History at ABC-CLIO. Dr. Tucker has written or edited 36 books, including ABC-CLIO's award-winning The Encyclopedia of the Cold War, as well as the comprehensive A Global Chronology of Conflict.

Priscilla Mary Roberts, PhD, is an associate professor of history and Honorary Director of the Centre of American Studies at the University of Hong Kong. She spent 2003 as a visiting Fulbright scholar at the Institute for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies at The George Washington University, Washington, D.C. She was the documents volume editor of ABC-CLIO's The Encyclopedia of the Cold War and the award-winning The Encyclopedia of World War I.

Extremely Biased and Prejudiced thru Selective Entries

It is obvious thru the topics omitted that this encyclopedia is extremely biased and prejudiced; it is indeed scandalous. To give a few examples:

- Massacres like those of Deir Yassin have an entry, but massacres by terrorists against Israeli and Jewish children like those of Kiryat Shmona, Ma'alot, in the seventies, do not get an entry

- Massacres against Jews from Arab countries are totally omitted. For example, the two Cairo massacres that took places in the Jewish quarter in Cairo in 1948, and where several dozen Jews were killed, and nearly a hundred were injured, are not mentioned. Nor is a third massacre where six Jews were killed in downtown Cairo is mentioned.

- The rape of Jewish women trying to escape Syria thru Lebanon in the seventies goes unmentioned.

- Also unmentioned is the mass arrest of Egyptian Jewish males between the ages of 17 and 60 from 1967 thru 1970. Their incarceration and torture in the detention camps of Abu Za'abal and Tura for up to three years was an act of revenge for Egypt's defeat in the war against the Jews of Egypt. Many of these Jews were paraded as Israeli POW's in Ramses Square where they were abused by mobs.

- The incarceration of Egyptian Jews in 1956, as well as their mass deportation out of the country, is never mentioned

- Authors like Mahmoud Darweesh have an entry in the encyclopedia, but Israeli authors like Shmuel Yossef Agnon do not have an entry. Also absent from the entries is Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the man responsible for the revival of the Hebrew Language. This is the only case in history where a language long unused was revived.

- Also unmentioned are Jewish authors from Arab countries like Albert Memi (author of Jews and Arabs).

The myths of the Aztec and Maya derive from a shared Mesoamerican cultural tradition. This is very much a living tradition, and many of the motifs and gods mentioned in early sources are still evoked in the lore of contemporary Mexico and Guatemala.

Professor Taube discusses the different sources for Aztec and Maya myths. The Aztec empire began less than 200 years before the Spanish conquest, and our knowledge of their mythology derives primarily from native colonial documents and manuscripts commissioned by the Spanish. The Maya mythology is far older, and our knowledge of it comes mainly from native manuscripts of the Classic period, over 600 years before the Spanish conquest.

Drawing on these sources as well as nineteenth- and twentieth-century excavations and research, including the interpretation of the codices and the decipherment of Maya hieroglyphic writing, the author discusses, among other things, the Popol Vuh myths of the Maya, the flood myth of Northern Yucatan, and the Aztec creation myths.

The myths of the ancient Aztec and Maya derive from a shared Mesoamerican cultural tradition which is still alive in the lore of contemporary Mexico and Central America. The Maya creation and flood myths have survived in various forms in pre-Hispanic writing and art, but the Aztec empire arose less than two centuries before the Spanish conquest and our knowledge of its mythology comes primarily from early colonial documents of the 16th century.

Dissapointing

This book was not what I had expected. To start with, it is only 80 pages, and 30 pages are taken up discussing the research history from which our knowledge of Aztec and Mayan myths derive. The 50 pages of mythology offer only a broad overview of myths (broader even than the excellent World Mythology: An Anthology of Great Myths and Epics by Donna Rosenberg). That said, it does an okay job of tying the myths into the culture and has lots of apposite pictures.

Overall, however, I regret having purchases this book.

Are we not men? Are we not maize?

This is an excellent volume for introductory, background,
and inspired reading to do further research on the Aztec
and Mayan mythologies. Don't let the number of pages
fool you (80) -- there is a wealth of solid information
and well as excellent photographs and drawing reproductions
to inform, entrance, and entertain in this book.
The chapter titles are: Introduction; Major sources and
the History of Research; Aztec Mythology; Maya Mythology;
Mesoamerican Mythology. There is also a 2 page presentation
of Suggestions for Further Reading, which is very fine.
The Introduction, as well as the chapters, are subdivided
into helpfully labeled subsections. The Introduction's
subsections are: Ancient Mesoamerican History; Ancient
Mesoamerican religion (Calendrics; Day versus Night;
Twins; Role Models and Social Conduct). The chapter on
Aztec Mythology has the subsections: The Creation of
Heaven and Earth; The Restoration of the Sky and Earth;
The Origin of People; The Origin of Maize; The Origin
of Pulque ("an alcohoic beverage made from the fermented
sap of the maguey plant"); The Creation of the Fifth Sun;
Mythology of the Aztec State; The Birth of Huitzilopochtli.
The chapter on Maya Mythology has the subsections: The
-Popol Vuh-: Primordial Origins; The Hero Twins and the
Vanquishing of Xibalba; The Origin of Maize and People;
The -Popol Vuh- Creation Epic in Classic Maya Religion;
Maya Mythology of Yucatan; Yucatec Creation Mythology
and the Flood; Creation Mythology and Calendrics in
Yucatan.
The pictures and reproduction of drawings are incredible.
The cover picture for the book is of "The Maize God,
flanked by his sons Hunahpu and Xbalanque, emerging out
of the earth, represented as a split turtle shell."
On page 6 there is a very good map of Mexico and the
Mesoamerican region with the Aztec and Maya sites
located. Some of the other provocative pictures are of
A Mesoamerican Model of Time and Space, The Venus god
Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli attacking a watery mountain,
Mosaic sacrificial knife (Aztec), God 9 Wind (Mixtec),
Tezcatlipoca deity impersonator to be sacrificed during
the twenty-day month of Toxcatl, The Destruction of the Sun
of Wind and the Transformation of Humans into Monkeys, the
Aztec Calendar Stone, and many others.
An excerpt or two: "The rain god Tlaloc rules over the
third creation, the sun of rain. This world is destroyed
by Quetzalcoatl in a rain of fire -- probably volcanic ash,
a relatively common geological occurrence in central
Mexico. The fiery rain magically transforms the people of
this race into turkeys [! -- from "Aztec Mythology"]."
"Mesoamerican myths are more than sacred accounts of the
origins of the world; they also contain profound lessons
for proper behaviour. Among the most commonly mentioned
vices to bring disaster and defeat are arrogance and

A good introduction

As always, Karl Taube provides good value with a book about Mesoamerican mythology written specifically for the beginner. He starts by illustrating the various sources from which these stories have come down to us, and then recites Maya and Aztec beliefs (mainly concerning Creation) in a fluent and enjoyable way. He doesn't go into the details as much as one could wish, and makes little mention of secondary myths which aren't yet completely understood, but - especially as far as the Aztec part is concerned - he does a fine job of hooking the reader onto the spiritual worlds of cultures that have rarely found their equal in both comlexity and richness of meaning. Buy and get excited.
