About the Author

Marion K. Underwood, PhD, is an Ashbel Smith Professor of Psychological Sciences in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Underwood’s research examines anger, aggression, and gender, with special attention to the development of social aggression. Her work has been published in numerous scientific journals. She received the Chancellor’s Council Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award from the University of Texas at Dallas, was granted a K02 Mid-Career Independent Scientist Award from the National Institute of Mental Health, and is a Fellow of the Association for Psychological Science.

Lisa H. Rosen, PhD, is Clinical Assistant Professor in the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at the University of Texas at Dallas, and works with the University's Center for Children and Families. Dr. Rosen’s research examines risk factors for and consequences of peer victimization, and her work has been published in numerous scientific journals. She received the William C. Howell Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research and Scholarship and was granted an Early Career Travel Award by the Society for Research in Child Development.

Thorough and Vastly Informative

I've been reading US women's history for a couple of years now,

working on background for a novel, and I have seen nothing that

matches this book for careful, detailed exposition of the role of

women in the workplace. I'm most familiar with the period from

1880 to 1910, and Kessler-Harris covers that era thoroughly and

convincingly. Reading about the earlier years, though, has greatly

increased my understanding of the period I've been studying.

Kessler-Harris shows how paternalistic beliefs about "woman's

place," and views of women as weak and basically stupid, have from

the beginning deeply influenced the lives of women of all classes, but

she also shows how even the development of new machinery in

factories was shaped by the needs of employers to find cheap

workers--who were, of course, women.

I wish women would read this book. Talk about

consciousness-raising!

Having done a good deal of historical research with primary sources, on other subjects and in other periods, I know Kessler-Harris has been thorough and conscientious. She also writes very well. I'm going to buy the new edition, because whatever she has to say will be fascinating.

Republic Pictures rises from the Ashes in this book

This book written by Len D Martin is an invaluable source for checking out the movies from this studio. All the movies are documented here including the serials, cartoons and short subjects. But it's the movies that count.
Don't expect this to be like the books "The MGM Story, The Paramount Story or books like that.Those were from major studios and produced thousands of movies. This is a paperback with only a handful of photo's.But it does have all movies produced by this studio with a list of stars that appeared in the movie with a synopsis. It also gives some interesting notes as to what was the first movie made by the studio and last plus things like why John Wayne left the studio after 17 years.
I have been looking for a book like this for years on Republic Pictures and found it by accident on the amazon website.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have wanted a checklist of Republic Pictures products for some time. I was hoping that Jack Mathis would be able to finish his last book on the films of Republic but he died and left the material he was working on to the library at BYU. Since it is doubtful that Mathis' work will ever be published in my lifetime, I ordered this book. I have enjoyed browsing through it.
