Basic yet substantial...and quite effective....

One person asserted that only five pages are of value in this book. That might be a bit of an exaggeration. I will admit that there are so many metaphors that the author uses to get his point across. I guess I can appreciate this as I believe this book is geared toward the beginner. And in order to help a beginner understand; the use of metaphors comes in handy. I was growing a bit impatient as the book progressed. You will read through more than halfway through book before you even start any techniques. But instruction for the techniques are eventually covered and I found them to be extremely helpful.

Oddly enough, the technique that I typically use to meditate is not all that different. Pepin advises the half Lotus position but then also recommends a seated position for those of us who can't manage this position physically. I am one of those people and must sit with my feet flat on the floor. My legs go numb if I sit in any form of a lotus position for too long. In the past I have meditated by using a technique called "running energy" and it requires being seated with feet flat on the floor but with the palms up while resting on the thighs. I wonder if all the difference with Pepin's technique has to do with is bringing the placement of my hands toward the lower abdomen with one hand cupping the other (complete directions provided in the book, of course). Additionally, the placement of your middle and index finger on the three main chakras allowed me to "see" some really amazing things as far as clearing energy that isn't mine in my energy system.

I pretty much didn't start the techniques until I finished the whole book. The techniques are illustrated after reading rougly seventy percent of the book. But as he continues on with more metaphors I kinda started to feel like I lost the instruction from memory. Admittedly, I was getting a bit annoyed with it all. However, by the time you finish (at least the Kindle version, which is what I bought) you are invited to click a link that takes you to a web address in order to provide your e-mail address but also to view a demo video (which is on youtube.com). You also get acess to some very large zip files with more information. I have yet to read them but they are downloaded and waiting for me. I will provide an update later, perhaps. Providing a demo video is better than any type of written review or tyring to thumb back through my smartphone to find the illustrations and directions for the meditation I read previously (for those of you that don't know, Kindle doen't use page numbers so when you read something it can be a bit of a pain to try and go back to it since you can't reference page numbers). And yes, I do know that by providing your e-mail address that you will be solicited by Pepin's attempts to get you to buy more material. But that's no big deal as you can always opt out of them whenver you want by unsubscribing.

It seems that something as simple as changing hand placement has made my meditations reach the next level. With the technique that I used in the past I have always had my palms facing upward while resting on my knees. I feel like now that I have my hands cupped and resting at my lower abdomen that I am really channeling more energy (the prana tha the mentions) into me and I am clearing a lot of gunk in my body and chakras that simply needs to go. Pepin refers to the prana energy as "God" and that you have to ask and give permission to this energy to enter you in order to create healing. As I meditate I talk to the "prana" in a prayerful tone and ask for healing. Example, "Prana, please enter all of my lower chakras and help me cleanse and clear whatever is there that does not serve me." I carry on in this manner with my energy and body and am really feeling some shifts. Also, it really is amazing how much heat my body generates by using this technique. It's wintertime and I keep it at around sixty degrees in my place . I do this to save on energy costs; not because I like it. But after my meditating by using Pepin's technique I find myself sweating and need to remove my hat and sweatshirt.

I will say that I do disagree with one statement in his book. As far as hand/finger placement jis concerned, he says that focusing on the navel, heart and third eye chakra (2nd, 4th and 6th) is all that is necessary. I have tried it his way but have noticed that focusing on all the chakras along the spinal path has benefitted me more. I don't put my two fingers on every chakra but I do focus on directing prana into each chakra and I get a lot of clairvoyant imagery and information that is really beneficial for me.

Skim the first 50% of the book, then go panning for the gold nuggets.

Okay, okay: read the first few pages, there are a few nuggets in them. When you get tired of idiosyncratic use of words and phrases that may not fit anyone else's preferred pattern of speech, skip to 58%. You will miss out on inappropriate use of contractions, sentence fragments, and unnecessary comma placements throughout an aimless waffle of redundant chatter loosely based on the topic of meditation.

After that, the author does share GOLD. I've meditated for two decades, and never considered some of it. An example: hand posture, what some may call "mudras". I have 5 books on the subject, but never considered WHY some of it works, and the way he explained two examples was so "common sense", I marveled that I had never seen it before, and felt that half of the book's cost was worth that alone!

The author clearly knows his subject, and just as clearly has some good stuff to say. What keeps this book from being five stars is 1) the overall lack of organizational flow, and 2) the conversational tone was too loose for a non-fiction book.

However much I may or may not like the presentation, though, the "meat and vegetables" of this dish were too good not to give a decent score. Sort of like getting a 5-star restaurant to deliver their food in McDonald's wrappers.

Overall, I'm glad I read it. May the author enjoy the function of a good editor in the future!

There are a few nuggets of wisdom here that I am glad I found

I agree with many reviewers. There are a few nuggets of wisdom here that I am glad I found. Otherwise, as an author, I can't imagine how he let this book go out as completed. If he had beta readers who were looking for ways to improve readability, they missed the mark. Here are some of the writing errors: 1) He uses terms early in the book that are familiar to him but not the readers such as DOE and babbler. Eventually we find out what they mean, but at the time they are introduced we don't know what he is talking about. 2) He repeats ideas constantly without enlarging them. Just because you say it again, doesn't mean the reader knows what you mean. 3) He may be a wonderful speaker and teacher, but he is not a writer. He needs a really good ghost writer or at least an honest editor.
I have been reading about and practicing meditation for over fifty years. He does have some good insights I found helpful, but most of the book was a waste of time. I certainly wouldn't recommend it to a new meditator. They would be so confused they would shut down. So, in a nut shell, some good material if you are patient enough to wade through the confusion. I hope his classes are better than this.

The collector's item of the 20th Century!

This book is renowned as THE collector's item of the 20th Century. It's reputation precedes it due to the fact that when the authors' decided to publish an updated second edition, they felt it extremely necessary to include the now infamous Chapter 13, titled as "Enemy Attack And The UFO Potential."

This was confirmed in a highly revealing interview with one of the authors on "Sightings," a popular weekly television show hosted by Tim Rice and produced by Henry Winkler during the 1990s.

Inheriting Leonard Nimoy's "In Search Of" legacy, which aired during the 1970s, "Sightings" drew a tremendous audience during the 1990s as it explored and analyzed many different aspects of the paranormal and metaphysical genres.

When the "Sightings" crew focused their interest on the "Fire Officer's Guide to Disaster Control, Second Edition," it gave the book, its authors and its controversial Chapter 13 a level of public exposure that basically ripped the rug out from under any false notions that UFOs or alien craft were not real local, state or national issues.

I got my hands on a copy by calling Fire Engineering Books and Videos and pretending to be a firefighter. This was just before they caught on as to what was happening due to public interest generated by the "Sightings" episode.

Anecdote 1:

An atheist/agnostic friend of mine had read Chapter 13 and her comments were as such: "I can't believe this! This is absolutely shocking to me! Anyone who is the least bit mentally imbalanced would surely commit suicide after reading this!"

What amazed her the most was its casual, professional, matter-of-fact approach - as if to say this happens everyday for firefighters.

Anecdote 2:

My brother, who had just started his own trucking delivery service at the time, had actually crossed paths with the warehouse that stored and shipped copies of "Fire Officer's Guide to Disaster Control" for the publishing house. While making a delivery, he spotted the books stacked on pallets in the warehouse and, knowing a good opportunity when he sees one, decided to ask about the Second Edition.

The guys in the warehouse looked at each other and then back at my brother. They began to smile, grinning like the Cheshire Cat. "You're talking about that Chapter 13, right?" they asked. They already knew why he was inquiring. They told him that everyone always asks about that edition and that chapter.

Are You Sure You Want THIS Job?

This book is a broad study of about all the large disasters a Fire Officer might need to understand something about. There are statistics, and some very good facts about the many subjects including myths and misconceptions. And UFOs. The chapters are well organized and the print is large enough for relaxed reading. The book is written in a casual, but professional style that keeps your interest.

I recommend it for any EMS, Fire, or civil defense/preparedness students or professionals. The only reason for a 4/5 rating is the broadness of each subject. Anyone in the business knows each chapter is worth a book all by itself. This work is a great accomplishment and my copy cost $55 in 1995. Its only slightly dated, HazMat is still chemicals, riots are bad, Terrorism is still violent. These authors did a great job!

Defintely the MOST comprehensive disaster control book...

How many other books of this type have a chapter concerning how to deal with a UFO crash? Seriously, Chapter 13 is entitled "Enemy Attack and UFO Potential." I've always been a skeptic concerning these types of things, but when a completely serious book like this has a chapter about dealing with UFOs (and one of the authors claims to have seen one), you just have to wonder...

Excellent and useful text! If you have any interest in Scrum, this is the first book to buy!

This is a good read and an extremely useful text. As the blurb states: "Scrum is the most popular agile project management methodology used in web projects today." This is the kind of book that makes finding pertinent information easy and absorbable. There are more online resources made available to readers as well. There are colorful icons used to highlight specific kinds of information, in addition to some clear but informative graphics. The author, M. David Green, is a highly accomplished, writer, speaker, web engineer, agile coach, and the founder of a consultancy that helps people in engineering organizations collaborate to make constant improvement a daily practice. His expertise and facility with the subject matter are very clear in the elegant and useful way the material is presented. If you have any interest at all in Scrum, this is the first book to buy. As a side issue -- the paperback book was shipped in a padded envelope and arrived bent. Amazon should send it in a cardboard mailer, so people can treat their purchases as carefully or casually as they like. I really dislike buying a new book and having it arrive in "Acceptable" condition.

You won't become a scrum ninja, but you will learn everything you need to know at a team level

SitePoints scrum, novice to ninja starts off by giving you some background history into how scrum came about then takes you step by step through the scrum process, starting with who makes up a scrum team through to a hypothetical sprint encapsulating all the rituals and artifacts that make scrum what it is.

Scrum is not for everyone, even though it has major benefits over the old waterfall method of development. The author does point this out albeit not in a big way which is ok. He concentrates on what scrum is and leaves the decision as to whether this method of development will work for you.
In short, scrum is a methodology in which development is broken down into generally two week "sprints". During this two week sprint you have certain "rituals" that must be adhered to starting with sprint planning in which you detail "stories" and allocate "points" to each one which is a rough indicator of the amount of time/effort the team thinks that particular story should take. Each day there is a "daily standup" in which each member of the scrum team details what they accomplished the previous day, what they hope to accomplish this coming day and any impediments that may delay or hinder their work effort. A "story" is a unit of work that details what needs to be done as well as criteria for proving that what you code actually works. At the end of each sprint you have a team demo of all the stories completed during that sprint and also a retrospective in which the team discusses what they felt worked, what didn't work and could be improved upon and a list of improvements to be incorporated into the next sprint. As such, scrum is a constantly evolving process.

The author takes you through each of these steps one by one is a very clear and readable way. He introduces you to new concepts such as "sprints", "artifacts", "retrospectives" etc. and how these work, who should attend each of the scrum rituals and what should happen in these rituals such as the daily standup and also gives an indicator of how long these rituals should take. Along the way the author introduces you to a hypothetical scrum team and shows what is expected of each member of the team through a typical sprint.

Will you become a scrum ninja after reading this book? Certainly not. Scrum is an evolving process and it will take your team a little while to get used to this new method of working. You will need buy in from not only every member on your scrum team but also from management, the business and executives to make it work.

One thing I was a little surprised about was that the author didn't mention anything about SAFe agile. Scrum in and of itself works for small teams but when you have multiple scrum teams working towards a common goal like you do in larger enterprises, scrum in and of itself tends to break down. You need methods and practices to align each of the scrum teams to standardized sprint lengths, common backlogs, releases etc. which is where SAFe agile comes into play (the Scaled Agile Framework).

If you are new to scrum and wanting to learn what it is, how it works and what its benefits are, you can't go wrong with Scrum, Novice to Ninja. The author has done an excellent job of explaining things and giving examples. Even if you are looking at SAFe agile (of which scrum is the basis) this is an excellent guide to the team level of SAFe.

A mile wide and a yard deep

Barden & Thomas's "Introduction to Differential Manifolds" has the broadest coverage of any introductory graduate text in differential topology that I've seen, even more than Lee's Introduction to Smooth Manifolds or Guillemin & Pollack's Differential Topology, and in less than 200 pages. Not only does it cover the standard topics found in all such books, i.e., the rank theorem, diffeomorphisms, immersions, embeddings, tangent bundles, Sard's theorem, the Whitney embedding theorem, etc.; more topological topics, such as degree theory, the Poincare-Hopf theorem, Morse theory, and handlebodies; and the usual material with a more analytic or geometric flavor, such as differential forms, tensors, vector bundles, integration, Stokes's theorem, de Rham cohomology, and Lie groups and algebras, but there is also a chapter on fibre bundles (which already is rare for a book of this level) that includes further material on classifications of higher-dimensional manifolds that probably has never appeared in book-form before. Unfortunately, the treatment of many of these topics is rather cursory, with the most interesting material being the least well explained.

Except for Chapter 3 and the latter parts of Chapter 7, the book should be accessible for first-year graduate students. The explanations are a little more detailed than those of, say, Broecker & Jaenich's Introduction to Differential Topology, although not to the point of the spoon-feeding ones finds in Lee or Guillemin & Pollack, so students with no prior exposure to manifold topology may find that it moves a little too fast (all the material mentioned above fits into the first 165 pages). There's a 20-page refresher appendix on differential analysis, covering the prerequisites for the book, such as metric spaces, Banach spaces, (an unhelpful definition of) tensor products, the inverse function theorem, Sard's theorem, etc., although (1) much of it is too brief to help you if you don't know it already, (2) not all of it is really necessary for this book (e.g., don't worry if you don't know what a Banach space is), and (3) the full proof (modulo some mistakes) of Sard's theorem is given, so you don't need to have learned it elsewhere. There are between 2 and 8 exercises at the end of each chapter (relatively few when compared to other introductory texts), whose level ranges from the routine to the very difficult, but this is because they are "intended for students to work at and then discuss with a supervisor." However, "for the benefit of readers working independently," a chapter of solutions for the exercises is included, which is big plus.

The main problem with the book is that it tries to do too much, as there is no topic here that is not covered better in some other book, even though no other book covers all this material. Some of the chapters are way too brief, with the most egregious examples being that on Lie groups and Lie algebras (12 pages to cover both, including maximal tori and cohomologies of compact Lie groups), de Rham cohomology (it would really help if the reader has some exposure to algebraic topology first), and Morse theory and handle decompositions. One byproduct of squeezing in too many topics is that the proofs start to become rushed in the last couple of chapters, with lots of handwaving and some mistakes, as the care and precision in definitions and notation of the earlier chapters evaporates. Some of the biggest mistakes/weaknesses in this insufficiently copyedited book include: an overly restrictive proof of the Whitney embedding theorem; a mix-up in the proof of Stokes's theorem between equations on the manifold and those in the local coordinate neighborhood; at least 6 mathematical typos in the equations for Lemma 5.5.1; and 6 serious errors in the proof that every manifold admits Morse functions, including omitting the word "degenerate" in front of "critical point" and twice stating the exact opposite of what is intended(!). Furthermore, on p. 155 the authors state an important technical result on Lie subgroups and then prove only a special case to avoid dealing with the full technicalities, but implicit in their proof of the special case is actually an unrecognized use of the general case.

However, probably the worst mistakes occur on pp. 143-6 in an attempted proof of the Morse homology theorem that includes "open" sets that are not open, a Mayer-Vietoris cover that fails to cover the manifold in question (and a good thing, too, because if it did the formula would be wrong), and a diagram (Fig. 7.6) that clearly does not match the text. (You will have to learn Morse theory and handle decompositions from a different book, such as Hirsch's Differential Topology or Kosinski's Differential Manifolds, although even elementary books such as Gauld's Differential Topology: An Introduction or Wallace's Differential Topology: First Steps are better.) As a final example of a botched proof, I mention Sard's theorem, which the authors commendably attempted to state and prove for the minimal differentiability required. Unfortunately, what they ended up doing was stating the theorem properly in the case where the domain and range spaces have equal dimension, but then making a mistake in the estimation of the constants in the proof (cf. de Rham's proof, in Varietes differentiables, which they attempted to imitate, but missed), and misstating the theorem in the case where the dimensions are unequal, but then presenting the correct (except for a tiny mix-up) proof (from Milnor's Topology from the Differentiable Viewpoint) for the smooth case. See Sternberg's Lectures on Differential Geometry for a proper proof of the full theorem.

On the other hand, a few things are handled particularly well in the book: The various (5) definitions for tangent vectors (although I prefer Broecker & Jaenich's treatment, which these authors cite as an inspiration for this book), the proofs of the Poincare lemma and Mayer-Vietoris theorem in the chapter on cohomology, and degree theory (namely, degrees of maps, indices of vector fields, winding numbers, the Euler characteristic, and the Poincare-Hopf theorem that relates them; similar to treatments in Milnor and Guillemin & Pollack). The most startling feature of this book is the additional topics it covers; in particular, in Chapter 3 on fibre bundles, there's a section on "applications" that presents Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture (or should I say theorem now?) for 3-dimensional manifolds, along with a motivating analogy from the familiar 2-dimensional situation and a partial explanation of some of the terms involved (such as "pseudo-Anosov"), although most of this discussion will be way over the readers' heads, and there is understandably no mention of the method of proof. Even more surprising is what follows: A statement of Dennis Barden's own classification theorem for simply connected, closed, smooth 5-manifolds, which to my knowledge has not appeared outside his original papers. Unfortunately, the theorem is only then related to some Brieskorn varieties, about which is given not much more than a definition and an example. This material should really have been reserved for a more advanced text.

Wonderful Study Guide

I've been a fan of Kumon workbooks for the last 5 years. This Algebra workbook provides a thorough practice for my daughter this summer entering the 8th grade. Each page provides tips and an answer guide is provided. She has definitely been challenged by the problems. I recommend this as a great supplemental guide to parents.

excellent algebra workbook

My son didn't do very well in her algebra practice. Then one of my friends introduced this workbook to us. This book includes algebra practice such as solving for X, simplifying algebraic expressions and linear equations. Like other Kumon books, this one also emphasizes a logical progression and plenty of repetition to reinforce important concepts. Concepts are introduced gradually and built upon one another. At first, my son found the sections of advanced level difficult. I asked him to go back to the sections of standard level and do some additional practice and repetition. After he completed the easier sections, he surprisingly found that the advanced level was not so hard. He had progressed though the workbook and mastered earlier concepts that would help with the difficult section. This star system is really good, and Kumon is excellent. I can see my son’s progress since we worked together using this book. His math rank in Beestar’s 6th grade tests has also risen significantly. I highly recommend this workbook.

Help Middle Schoolers Learn the Skills Needed to Excel in Algebra and Thru the Woods of Math!

This is a wonderful book for those students who are taking algebra. I remember my father trying to help me with algebra. This book makes learning algebra as fun as it can be for my tutee. My tutee is good in math and this book should enable him to fly off the charts in beginning algebra, unlike his tutee who was lucky to receive an A after numerous nights of fatherly assistance.

Please give your family members or friends' children a head start by purchasing this book. The student will appreciate your thoughtfulness and assistance as he/she wanders through the woods of algebra.

Hermann Hoth led Germany’s 3rd Panzer Group in Army Group Center—in tandem with Guderian’s 2nd Group—during the invasion of the Soviet Union, and together those two daring panzer commanders achieved a series of astounding victories, encircling entire Russian armies at Minsk, Smolensk, and Vyazma, all the way up to the very gates of Moscow.

This work begins with Hoth discussing the use of nuclear weapons in future conflicts. This cool-headed post-war reflection, from one of Nazi Germany’s top panzer commanders, is rare enough. But then Hoth dives into his exact command decisions during Barbarossa—still the largest continental offensive ever undertaken—to reveal new insights into how Germany could, and in his view should, have succeeded in the campaign.

Hoth critically analyses the origin, development, and objective of the plan against Russia, and presents the situations confronted, the decisions taken, and the mistakes made by the army’s leadership, as the new form of mobile warfare startled not only the Soviets on the receiving end but the German leadership itself, which failed to provide support infrastructure for their panzer arm’s breakthroughs.

Hoth sheds light on the decisive and ever-escalating struggle between Hitler and his military advisers on the question whether, after the Dnieper and the Dvina had been reached, to adhere to the original idea of capturing Moscow. Hitler’s momentous decision to divert forces to Kiev and the south only came in late August 1941. He then finally considers in detail whether the Germans, after obliterating the remaining Russian armies facing Army Group Center in Operation Typhoon, could still hope for the occupation of the Russian capital that fall.

Hoth concludes his study with several lessons for the offensive use of armored formations in the future. His firsthand analysis, here published for the first time in English, will be vital reading for every student of World War II.

Hoth’s writing style is direct and to the point; yet it remains very readable and thought-provoking. He is a commander who cares very deeply about his soldiers and their well-being but also for the mentorship and development of his leaders... I would strongly recommend this book for any leader wanting to clearly understand what command (highlighted by bold, decisive action) entails in an operational context. (The Military Review)

Great Book!!!

This book should be in every person's military library if they have one. He details the proper use of tanks and illustrates the pros and cons of the battles that he was involved in and what may have been done differently for the Germans to have won the war.

German Panzer Group 3's invasion of Russia June-Oct 1941

"Panzer Operations: Germany's Panzer Group 3 during the Invasion of Russia, 1941" by Gen. Hermann Hoth (April 2015), which was originally published in German in 1956. As the subtitle of this book states, the battlefield scope of this book focuses on Panzer Group 3 during its invasion of Russia between June-Oct. 1941, although the author does review the "Big Picture" of the overall invasion..

Although this book totals 215 pages, 10% of the book is devoted to appendices & bibliography. The author devotes 6 pages to his thoughts regarding the viability of tanks during a possible nuclear war in Europe -- which really don't add much to this book. Fortunately, 16 pages are of nice campaign maps. The author spends several pages analyzing the differences between "operational" versus "strategic" goals versus "tactics" (p.28) and how such thoughts were contemplated by Clausewitz versus Scharnhorst, and how such thoughts influenced the German military mind during the 1870s, WWI, and Hitler.

As the author noted: "This book does not purport to be a definitive account of the military history of the Russian campaign" (p.7) ... "In the first few months of the Russian campaign, [the author's] Panzer Group 3 was the middlemost of the three northern German panzer groups".

The author noted: "The pros and cons of an attack against Russia are thoroughly described elsewhere" (p,39), but he does devote a couple of pages reviewing how the German campaigns against England (Operation Sealord), and in the Balkans, influenced Hitler's time-schedule in invading Russia (Operation Barbarossa).

Hence, with all of the author's prior-to-battle analysis, his discussion regarding his actual invasion and initial battles inside Russia are reduced to barely 80 pages -- but the author's prior-to-battle reflection is still very useful in understanding some of the battle-preparation thoughts of Hitler's staff as they developed the Russia-invasion plans -- and how they debated how much initial emphasis should be devoted to destroying Russian military units before turning attention to capturing political targets (Moscow vs. Leningrad).

As a graduate of the U.S. Army's "Command & General Staff College" myself, it was insightful that the author high-lighted some of the invasion problems: roads were more paved in northwestern Russia than in the south, different terrains (forests versus marshlands) constricted armour-column traffic routes, could bridges be secured before the Russians could destroy them?, where were Russian military units deployed?, how many Russian units were mech verses horse-drawn?, how soon would new and stronger Russian tanks replace weaker under-armed tanks?, how the lack of railroad lines impeded troop advancement?, etc.

The author noted how German generals debated whether or not to allow panzer units to rapidly advance -- as slower-moving supporting units might have to be left behind and play a slow catch-up (p.73).

No need here to recount how the author, Gen. Hoth, maneuvered his Panzer Group 3 during the invasion, except to note that he provided nice details as to how he conducted his maneuvers in advancing and encircling Russian units. He noted disputes between German military commanders, as how some Russian units escaped (temporarily) when Gen. Guderian decided to capture terrain heights to deprive them from the enemy (p.113). Gen. Hoth also discussed how campaigns changed (usually for the worse) as Hitler changed his mind as to how his units should be deployed within Russia -- even by mid-July (barely 30 days into the invasion). Besides discussing his own maneuvers, Gen. Hoth also describes how adjacent units were also affected by changes from Hitler's directives.

Gen. Hoth limits his book to essentially operational issues, he doesn't comment upon whether or not any of his units assisted in the rounding up of Jews or punishment of captured Russian guerrilla-partisans.

I highly recommend this very informative book.
