A very useful textbook

The What A World series is a collection of interesting stories which uses texts to guide learning. The stories are well-written and level-appropriate, vocabulary is practiced and recycled throughout each unit, and the learning exercises offer speaking and writing opportunities for students. I use Ms. Broukal's books quite often. I would rate this book more highly if difficult vocabulary was repeatedly used throughout the whole book, and more emphasis was placed on targeted grammar forms embedded within the readings, with more grammar exercises to keep in shape.

Whet my appetite

I read Silver Pigs based on the recommendations of someone on a historical fiction book group with me, and I really am grateful to her! This book is wonderful. In general, I stick to historical fiction in a fairly limited time frame, rarely venturing out of my favorite niche of Georgian and Regency era England. However, I have now become a devoted fan of the ancient Roman empire.

Lindsey Davis is so talented at melding little facts about daily life in Rome (and Britain) into her story. The story is told from the point of view of Marcus Didius Falco as though you are his contemporary, and he assumes that you understand all the "pop culture" references and side jokes he makes about Rome, Roman culture, and the Empire; in this way, you really *do* learn a lot about the history of the period, in a "Daily Show with Jon Stewart" type of way. It reads almost like a satirical account in a Roman newspaper might read. I LOVED the way Davis did that, and still managed to create truly sympathetic characters that you cheer for.

I'm excited to learn that there are at least sixteen books in the Falco series- I have added them ALL to my TBR pile and look forward to the pleasure of reading each one.

A True Roman Mystery

Lindey Davis has a marvelous capacity to make you feel like you are living in Rome of 2000 years ago. She developes her characters with a great flair and gives very human qualities that makes you feel like you have known Didius Falco personally. I began this series a month ago with, Silver Pigs. I have since read the the following four books and have ordered the rest. On the advice of one of the reviewers, I ordered her more recent books with Amazon.Co.UK so I didn't have to wait for them to be published here.

This is a strange piece of fantasy where the author is working at creating something original and different.
In my opinion the whole "The Labyrinths of Echo" is a series which you will love or hate.
...personally I like it.

I wouldn't suggest to start straight with this one.

About the Author
Raymond A. Serway (PhD, Illinois Institute of Technology) is Professor Emeritus at James Madison University. His honors and awards include an honorary doctorate degree from his alma mater, Utica College, the 1990 Madison Scholar Award at James Madison University, the Distinguished Teaching Award at Clarkson University in 1977, and the Alumni Achievement Award from Utica College in 1985. As Guest Scientist at the IBM Research Laboratory in Zurich, Switzerland, he worked with K. Alex M�ller, 1987 Nobel Prize recipient. He was a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory, where he collaborated with his mentor and friend, the late Sam Marshall. Dr. Serway is the coauthor of COLLEGE PHYSICS, Eleventh Edition; PHYSICS FOR SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS, Ninth Edition; PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS, Fifth Edition; ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS; MODERN PHYSICS, Third Edition; and the high school textbook PHYSICS, published by Holt McDougal. He has published more than 40 research papers in the field of condensed matter physics and has given more than 60 presentations at professional meetings.

Chris Vuille (PhD, University of Florida) is associate professor of physics at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, the world's premier institution for aviation higher education. While he has taught courses at all levels, including postgraduate, his primary interest is the teaching of introductory physics courses. He conducts research in general relativity, astrophysics, cosmology, and quantum theory and was a participant in a special three-year NASA grant program where he studied properties of neutron stars. His work has appeared in many scientific journals and in ANALOG SCIENCE FICTION/SCIENCE FACT magazine. He is the coauthor of COLLEGE PHYSICS, Eleventh Edition and ESSENTIALS OF COLLEGE PHYSICS.

Building on important advances in economics and law, Alexander Cooley and Hendrik Spruyt develop a highly original, interdisciplinary approach and apply it to a broad range of cases involving international sovereign political integration and disintegration. The authors reveal the importance of incomplete contracting in the decolonization of territories once held by Europe and the Soviet Union; U.S. overseas military basing agreements with host countries; and in regional economic-integration agreements such as the European Union. Cooley and Spruyt examine contemporary problems such as the Arab-Israeli dispute over water resources, and show why the international community inadequately prepared for Kosovo's independence.

Contracting States provides guidance to international policymakers about how states with equally legitimate claims on the same territory or asset can create flexible, durable solutions and avoid violent conflict.
