A Mind at Peace, by Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar

A Mind at Peace, originally published in 1949, is a magnum opus, a Turkish Ulysses and a lyrical homage to Istanbul. With an innate awareness of how dueling cultural mentalities can lead to the distress of divided selves, Tanpinar gauges this moment in history by masterfully portraying its register on the layered psyches of his Istanbulite characters. Set on the eve of World War II in the “city of two continents,” this literary feat is a narrative of duality: a historical novel and a love story (of the senses and the mind), language and music, tradition and modernity, East and West—and of the vital juncture where one young man must attempt to bridge all of these worlds at once.

Surviving the childhood trauma of his parents’ untimely deaths in the early skirmishes of World War I, Mmtaz is raised and mentored in Istanbul by his cousin Ihsan and his cosmopolitan family of intellectuals. Having lived through the tumultuous cultural revolutions following the fall of the Ottoman Empire and the rise of the early Turkish Republic, each is challenged by the difficulties brought about by such rapid social change.

The promise of modernization and progress has given way to crippling anxiety rather than hope for the future. Fragmentation and destabilization seem the only certainties within the new world where they now find themselves. Mmtaz takes refuge in the fading past, immersing himself in literature and music, but when he falls in love with Nuran, a complex woman with demanding relatives, he is forced to confront the challenges of the World at large. Can their love save them from the turbulent times and protect them from disaster, or will inner obsessions, along with powerful social forces seemingly set against them, tear the couple apart?

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Originally published in 1949, Tanpinar's sweeping literary masterpiece is a love story of his native Turkey and of the flesh. As Turkish culture shifts from its traditional roots to a more modernized society in the 1930s, protagonist Mmtaz seeks to preserve the past. After his parents' untimely death, he becomes a devotee of Turkish literature under the tutelage of his cousin and mentor, Ihsan. Mmtaz is like a figure in a novel, confronted by tragedy at a young age, ensuring that its effects would always afflict him and perhaps that is why he chooses to focus on a disappearing past. He soon falls in love with Nuran, an unattainable woman with a complicated background. Mmtaz believes that his love for Nuran will be enough to save them both from the changing times and protect them from disaster. Tanpinar's lyricism and resonant plot will leave U.S. readers wondering why they've had to wait so long to read this exquisite novel. (Oct.)

Review
Tanpinar (1901-62) was a formative figure in modern Turkish letters, although 50 years after his death, his career in English is just getting off the ground. His monumental A Mind at Peace (1949), which Orhan Pamuk has called “the greatest novel ever written about Istanbul,” found its way into English in 2008 (Archipelago). Set just before World War II, it conjures on a vast scale the world of Istanbul during the early Turkish Republic, a time when modern Western values were abruptly imposed upon a people and a culture unprepared for them. The ramshackle modernity that resulted, in which Ottoman history and tradition were largely written over, became Tanpinar’s lasting subject: the “void,” as he once described it, of a people “suspended between two lives.” — New York Times Book Review

[A] masterpiece. . .[A] honeyed, searching, and melancholy epic. . .The novel is as much about its setting and colors as about the stories and wonderfully eccentric and varied panoply of characters. . .One of the 20th century's notable literary love stories and cultural watersheds.— The Los Angeles Times

The greatest novel ever written about Istanbul.— Orhan Pamuk

Tanpinar′s sweeping literary masterpiece is a love story of his native Turkey and of The flesh…His lyricism and resonant plot will leave U.S. readers wondering why they've had to wait so long to read this exquisite novel.— Publishers Weekly

Every page is full of sharp insights into human nature, delivered with a linguistic confidence that cracks like a whip and warms one from the inside with a glow of recognition—the recognition that no matter how far away we think we might be from one another in time and space, we are all distilled from the very same mixture of passion and compassion, intelligence and foolishness.— Ugur Akinci

A beautifully melodic picture of Istanbul and the Bosphorus during a crossroad of Turkish and world history. We shouldn’t have had to wait this long for such an important work.— Literary Fiction Review

Written by the man who almost single-handedly defined the modern Turkish novel, A Mind At Peace follows a group of westernized, urban intellectuals in 1930s Istanbul as they drift through the city in a permanent state of ennui, seemingly caught between the past and the present, tradition and modernity, the East and the West.— Reza Aslan

His great novel combines the emotional storminess of Dostoevsky with the refined artificiality and cruel psychological analysis of Marcel Proust.— Ha'aretz

About the Author
Ahmet Hamdi Tanipar (1901-1962) was a poet, short story writer, novelist, essayist, literary historian, member of the Turkish parliament, and professor at Istanbul University. Deeply influenced by Valry and Bergson, he created a cultural universe in his work, bringing together a European literary voice and the sensibilities of Istanbul cosmopolitanism. His work, notable for its aesthetic complexity and its vivid descriptions of a lost Ottoman world, was rediscovered a decade after his death. He is considered one of the most significant Turkish novelists of the 20th century and is credited as an influence on many Turkish writers, including Nobel laureate Orhan Pamuk. His work has been translated into more than 25 languages.

Translator: Erdag Gknar is an assistant professor of Turkish Studies at Duke University. He is the translator of Orhan Pamuk's historical novel, My Name is Red, which received the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award in 2003. He is also the recipient of an NEA translation grant for A Mind at Peace.

A lyrical novel of Istambul
By las cosas
Orhan Pamur speaks of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar as an essential part of his sense of Istambul. Based on his descriptions of Tanpinar in his book Istambul, I was excited to read this translation of Tanpinar's masterpiece.

The physical book is extremely attractive, even sensual. With an old photo on the cover of several rowboats on the Bosphorus you are being introduced to the world within the book's covers. Elegant endpapers, thick off-white paper, and an unusually square shape to the book all present a pleasant, inviting physical object. Archipelago Books, I publisher I'd not encountered before, did an excellent job (though their editor missed a few too many errors).

On opening the book the first thing you notice is the lack of any notes, introduction, or even an index to the various Parts of the book. This is puzzling, and unfortunate. The dust jacket provides a few sentences on the author and this work (in addition to a few sentence plot summary). And even those sentences tell us little. What does it mean to say that this book is "a Turkish Ulysses"? The book deserves a wide readership, beyond the niche of people already familiar with this author. And that readership needs at least some minimal sign-posts to help navigate this dense examination of Istambul's intellectual, philosophical and moral dilemmas at the start of World War II. One method would be an introduction explaining the dynamics of Turkey at that time, and explaining Tanpinar's place in that debate. Another would be to provide a few footnotes, or end notes, explaining certain words or concepts unlikely to be understood by the average English speaking reader. For example, the debate over whether a character is mevlevi or bektashi was completely lost on me. How about you?

The novel starts "(City of Two Continents, August 1939)". And that could also be the one sentence summary of the novel. Turkey and its citizens are about to be plunged into WWII, a Western war that is very on the periphery of its interests, history and consciousness. But what is consuming the characters in this novel is the doppelganger of living in the past and the present, in the East and in the West, in two continents, two realities.

The novel is told using both the first and third person views of the main character, Mumtaz. And even the third person observations are claustrophobic, told from a ground level prospective never far from the immediate observations of Mumtaz, a young writer and intellectual who "does" essentially nothing during the 1939 focus of the book. He thinks, observes, feels. His love for Nuran, his hatred of yet attraction to Suad, the filial love and respect for Ihsan...these are drawn out in long, complex worlds of emotion that slowly built and deepen as the novel progresses.

But the central character in this novel is Turkey, Turkish, Istambul and the Borphorus. What do these things mean to a well educated, not-poor (I'm not sure what "class" these intellectuals belong to...but few have a conventional job) group of largely male intellectuals? The answer is a deep ambivalence. They live in a city of past architectural glory, the capitol of a vast empire. And while they are part of that heritage, they are also drawn to the present, to the Western. This is most often described in descriptions of music. Some of the most lyrical parts of the book describe Turkish classical music, the sound of the ney while a singer intones verses composed for various sultans. And while this is being lyrically described Mumtaz will realize that he is actually thinking of a Beethoven sonata. Quoting a Farsi couplet the discussion will veer to French symbolist poets. But oh the longing, the sorrow, of those couplets:
The days foreshortened, aged men in Kanlica
Conjure memories of past autumns one by one.

By the end of the novel you are left with a deep understanding of the longing felt by Mumtaz, to be his own person, not dragged down by the weight of his history and culture, yet aware that without those things he would be empty. "The vast fallout of two centuries of disintegration and collapse, of being the remnants of an empire and still unable to establish our own norms and idioms."

So why only 4 starts (and actually I would give it a 3.5)? Because of the lamentable translation. My definition of a good translation is one I don't notice. And this fails my test miserably. There is little plot in this novel. It is a closely observed study, and by necessity that means a book that is slowly, closely, read and observed. The lyrical content simply must be accompanied by similar prose or the image is shattered. On every page the reader encounters a variety of translation ticks: the hackneyed phrase, the unnecessarily complex words, the odd spelling, the anti-lyrical and the weird.

Hackneyed: hither and yond, oft times, by and by, by and large, truth be told, kith and kin, hale and hearty, sing a ditty, let the cat out of the bag, a slave of his baser desires.

Big words: in one paragraph we encounter quiddities, haecceities and ideational.

Odd spelling: phantasy and magick [each used many, many times].

Anti-lyrical: "Ihsan's personality was more agreeable than those personae of his preconceptions might have indicated" "exercise her volition to live apart" "the verdure assaulted one's casing of skin."

Weird: "at whiles." Synonym for periodically or at times. And used way too often!

So maybe Tanipar is addicted to archaic spellings, has a huge vocabulary that he throws around, is addicted to hackneyed phrases and the translator is merely following the original. Maybe, but adding all of these quirks together, if the translator has merely followed the original, this book would not be "the greatest novel ever written about Istambul," quoting Orhan Pamur.

A Mind at Peace
By Patrick Oliver Kelley
This is a novel more in the spirit of a wm Faulkner novel than a Robert Graves piece. Why did I expect more war than personal, romantic intimacy? Frankly, I wonder if the translator has ever been in Turkey for any period of time. Imagery is good, but for me the translation is 'too high brow' maybe I should have tried to read the original Turkish, before turning to the English version because much of the English seems too 'unTurkish.' So much of what is translated seems more an invention of the translator than the intent of the author. I am soldering on reading the book because of the unique subject and unique period it encompasses.
Hope I am not offending anyone, but it's my review

A Mind at Peace
By Steven Davis
"What is it that should be done?" This is the central question of A Mind at Peace at both the public and personal levels. The novel is set on the eve of World War II in Istanbul, Turkey. Its protagonist, Mmtaz, is a young, unmarried academic and would-be novelist. He is principally occupied at the moment, however, with caring for his older cousin İhsan who suffers from what appears likely to be a fatal case of pneumonia. İhsan had been Mmtaz's guardian and mentor ever since the latter's parents died as a result of the Greek invasion of Anatolia in 1919--events which Mmtaz recalls at the beginning of the novel.

Mmtaz also reflects ruefully upon his recently broken love affair with Nuran, a divorced woman slightly older than Mmtaz. In the long walks he takes to escape from the sick room, every sight and sound seems to recall the times he spent with Nuran.

After this prologue, the novel shifts back a year or more in time to Mmtaz's first meeting with Nuran. It is a relationship we know is doomed to failure, but not how or why. In the meantime, the two lovers, enraptured with one another, spend many idle hours in all seasons exploring their city--from palaces to bazaars, from waterways to ancient ruins. Eventually Mmtaz even wonders "Do we love each other or the Bosphorus?"

On a par with their passion for Istanbul is the pair's enthusiasm for traditional Turkish music. There are lengthy discussions about it, as well as sessions where Nuran's uncle, a noted vocalist, and his friends perform for guests. (It's a shame that the novel couldn't have included a CD to satisfy readers' inevitable curiosity about the folk music described in such rapturous terms.)

Notwithstanding the love story and travelogue, A Mind at Peace is essentially a novel of ideas. It is August 1939, and the world is obviously on the brink of another great war. The Turks have no reason to expect that they won't be involved, but should they just let the currents of history carry them into another bloodbath? What is the responsibility of the individual, especially of the intellectual, at times like this? After long talks with his cousin, Mmtaz asks himself: "Maybe İhsan does have a point! This society wants ideas and maybe even a struggle out of me. Not romantic posturing! But to achieve this end must I forget about Nuran?"

There is obviously much of Hamlet's "To be, or not to be..." in Mmtaz's dilemma. Readers of Robert Musil's The Man Without Qualities will also find themselves on familiar ground with a protagonist full of ideas but lacking in direction. In contrast to Mmtaz there is Suad, a key character introduced fairly late in the novel, who is his mirror image: a man of intellectual attainment but impulsive, irresponsible, self-indulgent and proud of his Sadean amorality. Nuran, in contrast to both of these men, is centered on her feelings, her family, and her cultural roots. In the author's words, "Nuran depended on a minimum level of selfhood. She lived through her milieu."

A Mind at Peace is a great novel that brings forth ideas of epic scale out of an intimate story, and does so against an unforgettable historical and cultural backdrop. The principal characters, notwithstanding their penchant for philosophical abstracts, are convincingly complete and complex. The author's prose, beautifully translated, has an evocative and lyrical quality in keeping with the musical theme running through the novel. Here, for example, is a passage describing Nuran:

"Not a single spot existed on her small face with which he wasn't familiar. For Mmtaz, her face became his panorama of the soul: the way it blossomed to love like a flower, closed definitively upon a despairing smile--the metallic radiance burning in her eyes asquint--and not least of all the way her face changed by degrees like a daybreak over the Bosphorus.... With a look, she dressed him up and stripped him down, at one moment turning him into a pitiful, forsaken malcontent with no recourse but Allah, and at the next into the very master of his fate."

For both its profound discussion of ideas central to the human condition and its vivid portrayal of a place, a time and a people, A Mind at Peace is highly recommended.

Millions of immigrants risk deportation and imprisonment by living in the US without legal status. They are living underground, with little protection from exploitation at the hands of human smugglers, employers, or law enforcement. Underground America presents the remarkable oral histories of men and women struggling to carve a life for themselves in the US.

Starred Review. McSweeney's Voices of Witness series continues (following Voices of the Storm and Surviving Justice) with this collection of oral histories from undocumented immigrants, aka "illegal aliens": "We hear a lot about these people in the media... how they are responsible for crime... take our jobs... and refuse to speak English. But how often do we hear from them?" Culled from new interviews, the book's 24 subjects come from around the world (Mexico, China, South Africa, Colombia, Cameroon and others), each offering a vivid, personal, often wrenching and occasionally enraging first-person look into the immigrant experience, what editor and novelist Orner calls a "state of permanent anxiety." Roberto, for instance, details narrow brushes with government agents as well as the everyday dangers inherent to unregulated work: "Nectarines are covered in this dust that makes your skin itch... You wear gloves when you're picking them but, because of the sweat, your skin absorbs everything, right into the pores." Diana, from Peru, worked on Hurricane Katrina cleanup and reconstruction crews while living 20 or more to a house: "I still have spots on my legs... from the chemicals and insulation that came off the walls at those jobsites." Average news-watchers who think they have a grasp on the immigration debate may well find these stories, speaking for millions of invisible American residents, no less than revelatory.

True to the series, this book gives voice to the voiceless.
By Harrison Kalodimos
When Vica was picked up by Immigration and placed in detention, she was already visibly sick from HIV that had progressed to AIDS. She had been arrested for drinking and driving, and a background check exposed her lack of documents. She pleaded with the guards to let her see a doctor so that she could get back on her medications, but they refused. It wasn't until she was crippled by a high fever and diarrhea that they finally allowed her to go to a hospital, but by then it was too late. Her mother, Olga, heard what was happening to her daughter, the child born of rape for which she was exiled from her family in Mexico, yet was powerless to do anything. If she went to the hospital, she feared deportation or worse. After many phone calls, an advocate arranged for visitation papers, so that Olga could be by her daughter's side for the last painful hours of her life. And as she held her daughter's withered body in her arms, Olga saw that her little girl was chained to the bed like a dog.

In the midst of the debate over immigration reform and border security in our country, both democratic and republican politicians have a fair share of airtime to argue their opinions on the issue. However, the voice of American immigrants, the people whose lives are most affected by this legislation, have had no voice in this issue, no chance to offer up their own stories. The media portrayal of immigrant families is a bizarre caricature, focused entirely on their status, with no trace of humanity in the statistics. As a result, the most vehement voices in the debate actively dehumanize this segment of American society as either noble savages or dangerous criminals. Vica's story has no place in today's debate, for she is neither a saint nor a sinner, she is simply a human being.

While Vica's voice has been permanently silenced, in Underground America, Olga and fifteen other men and women are given an opportunity to have a voice, to tell their story without fear of retribution. Their stories do not fit well into stereotypes or any simplistic narrative you'll hear on cable news. Rather, they contain the beautiful and compelling complexity that is inherent in every human life. This is a powerful book, not only for the emotional content of the stories, but for its great potential to re-humanize the debate on immigration reform in our country. To all those who hold strong opinions on immigration, this book is a must read

The Mix Of Romance, Mystery and Action in This Series Is Unsurpassed
By Douglas C. Meeks
I read a lot of fantasy/paranormal romance, much of what is classified as urban fantasy really is romance in many cases but I can count on my fingers(with a couple left over) the number of writers that can really pull off a true emotional, gut-felt and truly believable “I can’t live without you” romance. Nalini Singh is one of those very few and this book pulls you right into that “love to last the ages” feeling while trying to figure out a sinister plot that has you guessing a good bit.

We start with a summons to a meeting by a mysterious and ancient order of angels known as the Luminata who call the entire Cadre together to discuss the fate of Lijuan’s territory since it appears she is no longer in charge of her lands (her actual status is saved until the last page).

It soon becomes apparent that this is a dual plot since the above plot gets shunted aside until later in the book because of some very sinister things going on at the fortress of the Luminata.

This is a great set of plots and the romance is worked into the story beautifully as well as finally some answers to a few questions that have been hanging around this series for a long time plus it looks like we may add a few secondary characters to the series.

This book does reveal something that has not been shown a lot in this series, which is that none of the Cadre are really 1 dimensional characters, we get a bit of time with all of them in this book.

Bottom Line: 5 Stars, maybe I am just addicted to the writing of Nalini Singh because there is really nothing to even mention that was negative, The story was riveting, the emotion was heartfelt, the only thing I can ever complain about is this book could have been 200 pages longer and I still would have wanted more, there is so much fertile ground for future stories. 5 Stars for one of the paranormal genre’s premier writers once again giving us an exceptional story that you will remember long after the last page.

My new favorire of the series: Heart of Love, Heart of Darkness
By LynnL
One of my supreme delights in the literary world is a new Guild Hunter book from Nalini Singh, and when it features the main couple, Elena and Raphael, my pleasure rises high, or at least up where the angels fly. Adding to the happiness, Raphael and Elena are on a mission together, and it is clear their relationship has deepened considerably. They have been summoned along with the whole Cadre to meet at a remote compound called Lumia by a group of ascetic monk-like angels known as the Luminata who live in Morocco. That right there tells you what fun awaits because when the Cadre of archangels attend meetings, they are always amped up power fests especially with the Cascade still in effect which causes archangelic powers to rise exponentially. The very creepy Archangel of China, Zhou Lijuan’s disappearance drives the need for decisions to be made about her huge territory which is in danger of descending into chaos. The tension and drama escalates quite high with all the archangels in the world gathered in one place. Two years have passed so Elena has had some time to grow into the strength of her angel immortality as well as adjust to her consort duties; however, putting a warrior hunter angel in fancy gowns does not a calm and sedate consort make.

When Elena and Raphael arrive in Lumia, they feel a wrongness about this ancient citadel that belies the leader and brothers’ goal of gaining luminescence: a type of angelic enlightenment achieved by being set apart from the politics and machinations of the angel world. The members of this powerful sect have many hidden secrets some of which will have a life changing effect on Elena. They are accompanied by Aodhan who continues to rejoin the world and heal from his emotional wounds. He and Elena make a good investigative team tasked with unearthing the mysteries hidden deep within the stone walls as Raphael and the other archangels clash over Lijuan’s situation while reigning in their violent tendencies because being in such close proximity continually ruffles everyone’s feathers. Back in her grandmother’s homeland, Elena also seeks to find any possible information about the unknown vampire in her background. What she discovers is astonishing.

Nalini Singh’s stories always have a strong theme of love and family whether the characters are couples, blood relations, or families made by people linked together through a bond of love. So while there is plenty of action, adventure, and sensational secrets revealed, at the heart of it all as the title suggests shines the love between an archangel and his consort as Elena thinks, “Love surrounded her, so deep she felt it in her bones.” I absolutely adored this book; it may be my favorite one in the series yet. The very best stories speak to the heart, give a thrill ride, and leave the reader longing for more at the end. This book accomplishes all of those things to the highest degree and will make fans of this series feel they are soaring with the angels.

Elena's History is Explored
By Sheila M
"He was hers. She was his. And together, they were something far better than either one of them was alone."

FINAL DECISION: Goes deeper into Elena's background in unexpected ways. This book is a tightly drawn suspense story, political thriller and a very human story about surviving and rising above the past. Plus, there is a very settled and sexy couple: Elena and Raphael.

THE STORY: This book continues the focus on guild hunter turned angel Elena and her archangel lover Raphael. Things have been quiet since the disappearance of Lijuan, the Archangel of China (who also happens to be crazy dangerous). A year has passed and because no one knows whether she lives or has withdrawn from the world and is sleeping, there is uncertainty. An ancient order of angels called the Luminata calls the Cadre together to make a determination of what to do with Lijuan's territory.

Attending the Luminata requires Raphael and Elena to travel near the place of her grandmother's birth. There, Raphael and Elena must deal with dangerous archangels, mysterious threats, strange events surrounding the Luminata. Elena also hopes to find out more about her past and that of her family.

OPINION: The Guild Hunter series returns to focus on Elena and Raphael. I have to admit that I love the Elena and Raphael books most in the series. This book, thankfully, doesn't involve problems in the relationship between Elena and Raphael (that remains increasingly strong) but rather Elena's own history.

This book continues the overarching series story regarding the Cascade, Lijuan and the possible end of the world. While this book doesn't have a romance as its organizing feature, it doesn't need one. This book delves into the adventure and politics of the Guild Hunter world -- but reserves its emotional core for Elena's discovery of her own family's past.

There is a dark suspense story involving the Illuminata who are a mysterious addition to the series. Elena ends up investigating what is going on with this mysterious group and their connection with her own family. That story keeps the pace of this book quick and the pages turning.

While the suspense story keeps the books hopping, the theme explored in this book is about how the past makes us who we are and how one can overcome the pain of the past to go forward. Multiple characters in the book have to deal with their past -- the question is how will they respond. This is most present in Aodhan who is recovering himself after years of separating himself from those he loves. The events in this book challenge his recovery and he must make a choice. The series has been an increasing interaction between those of Raphael's world and Elena. In this book, we see the developing relationship between Elena and Aodhan, which has its own contours.

Singh goes deep into the emotions of her characters and even as the events feel dark and dangerous, her characters possess a lightness and beauty that gives the book heart. I always love reading Singh's books because even when things seem bad for her characters, they maintain a likeability and a lightness of spirit that overcomes all the darkness.

The events of this series appear to be approaching a crescendo and this book provides a little breather that allows the exploration of character and relationships. Elena finds out the truth about her mother's family which has been shrouded in mystery. I'm glad I didn't know where this book was going because I enjoyed the resolution which provided a happy ending in an unexpected arena.

Without giving away the secrets of this book, I can say that this book is about survival and overcoming darkness. So many characters express this theme and it leaves such a good feeling that I dread that more darkness is on the horizon for these characters.

For fans of the series, this book gives more background on the characters you love and gets everyone in the right place for the next stage in this series. There are no new romances but much happens in this book that illuminates where the characters are now and where they have come from.

WORTH MENTIONING: We learn more about Aodhan.

CONNECTED BOOKS: ARCHANGEL'S HEART is the ninth book in the Guild Hunter series. This series builds upon each of the prior books in the series and thus should be read in order.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4.5 stars.

Anyone can publish on Amazon - this is proof.
By Carey Holzman
This really isn't a book at all. it's more like a pamphlet or a guide. It's rife with spelling and grammatical errors. The author doesn't care enough to proof-read (just read it out loud to yourself and you'll easy find all the errors.) I'd say there was a spelling or grammatical error every other page. Given that there are so few pages, it really shows how much the author cares. Probably one of the least helpful books I've had to interpret (because of all the spelling and grammatical errors, it was a bit challenging deciphering what the author was attempting to communicate.) The minimum price Amazon will sell a text is .99. That's what this should be selling for and, even then, it's too much for too little. Sorry. I wanted to like it. Be aware this is only a few pages in length. Caveat Emptor. Anyone can publish on Amazon - this is proof.

Good People: The Only Leadership Decision That Really Matters, by Anthony Tjan

Good people are your organization’s most critical asset. But what does it really mean to be good?

Leaders love to say that any company is only as good as its people, but tend to evaluate candidates and employees more by their measurable accomplishments than by their “softer” qualities, like integrity, compassion, and other values. Bestselling author Anthony Tjan is leading a movement to change the way we think about goodness so that we can become better judges of people and create more goodness in ourselves, in others, and in our organizations.

Tjan argues that while competence is necessary, real goodness must also encompass values; a fantastic rsum can never compensate for mediocre character. In Good People, he provides a clear language to discuss goodness, redefining it as a lifelong, proactive commitment that, like any skill, can be exercised, honed, and taught. When leaders prioritize goodness in themselves and in others, they can create lasting cultures and tremendous value.

Drawing from his own experiences as an entrepreneur and venture capitalist, Tjan also taps into the wisdom of his relationships and interviews with extraordinaryinnovators, executives, artists, academics, teachers, and role models from all disciplines and walks of life who embody his vision. The cases and profiles shared include: Harvard Business School Dean Nitin Nohria, who has called for balancing leadership of competency with leadership of character; Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor, who has never forgotten her roots and shows profound kindness to her staff and clerks; Hollywood talent manager Shep Gordon, who has counseled his clients on the importance of generosity and gratitude; legendary venture capitalist Henry McCance, whose success proves that humbly ceding the spotlight to others makes room for their greatness; and master jazz musician Clark Terry, who devotedly mentored the young, blind pianist Justin Kauflin.

Packed with practical yet often surprising advice,Good Peopleestablishes a new language and framework you can use to evaluate, develop, and lead with goodness. Tjan will convince you that there is a hard truth in the “soft stuff” of business, and that choosing and working well with good people is truly the only leadership decision that really matters.

A Business Book for People Who Don't Like Business Books - Fascinating, Brave and True
By George DeMark
This book is a knockout - and inspiring to boot - and the reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because I don't give ANYTHING 5 stars! :). I read the author's earlier book, Heart Smarts Guts and Luck and really loved it. Also I have to say that when my son went off to college I actually saw it on the bookshelves of two of his friends - which has to mean something! I've been waiting for a follow-up and this book didn't disappoint me in the slightest - just the opposite as a matter of fact. The premise of Anthony Tjan's new book is that instead of judging other people by what's on their resumes, or what college they went to, or whether they were the valedictorian in high school - what the author calls "judging people by competencies" - the truth of the matter is we judge the people around us, whether they 're our colleagues at work or the people we love the most (e.g. family and friends) - by whether or not they are "good people." Do we like their characters? Their values?

For some reason I thought of "Girls" the Lena Dunham show. Now, wait, before you dismiss me as a crank - all I mean is that for years everyone has known about 20-somethings in Brooklyn and it's been obvious to people - but Girls was the only show to DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. Meaning, people talk about things that are right in front of them but what do they do about them? Lena Dunham did a show - Anthony Tjan wrote a book! Tjan's idea may be obvious to people in a kind of well, yeah! of course! way - we all KNOW in some ways that at the end of the day we want to surround ourselves with good people - but this is the first book to DO SOMETHING about it - and to reveal truths that are right before our eyes in an actionable way that in the end is also kind of moving.

The book is very entertaining - I read it in two sittings - and filled with great examples of people who carry out what Tjan calls "the good people principles." I don't know about you but I think it's pretty courageous for a very successful businessman like Tjan in a he-man corporate world to write about what he calls "the hard truth behind soft matters." In fact, I wish Tjan would take this space to himself - the kind of thoughtful-slash-spiritual category of business - because he could basically own the whole category. When I put the book down I was reminded that we all have about half a dozen masks and identities we wear in our lives, but that's what they are - ROLES - as in "All the world's a stage" (and that's the only Shakespeare I know). Under that are the 97 percent of things we have in common with other human beings, and depending on our level of security-insecurity, do we have the guts - as Tjan does by writing this book- to reveal our humanity and not, say, believe for one tiny second in our "achievements" or our "titles" and all the rest of the bogus tin life awards some people?

As the book closes out, Tjan asks: Can we change just 10 people around us by helping them become better, fuller versions of themselves? I got a shiver down my back when I read that. So can we? I don't know about you but I can't get that idea out of my head. If you read "Good People" you won't be able to, either. How will your 10 people be?

Good People, Great Book
By Bookworm88
For all the discussion of technologies, metrics, and strategies in today's rapidly changing world, businesses at their core remain nothing more than simply a group of people organized to achieve a common goal. This book reminds us of that fundamental truth and brings it alive in a business context through its elucidation of core principles and real-life examples centered around a people-first philisophy. Author Anthony Tjan clearly has demonstrated in his own career that he has all the "hard skills" which are extolled by the business school professors and the business press, but it's obvious the key lessons that have stayed with him throughout and serve as his own personal compass are the ones he outlines in this book. An enjoyable read with stories that will stick, but its real staying power lies in the author's recognition that the question of goodness in people (and businesses) is one which contains a great deal of nuance - and it's in the space between the folds where the real learning resides.

The Accelerated Sublime: Landscape, Tourism, and Identity, by Claudia Bell, John Lyall

Over the past two hundred years, transportation technology has enabled citizens of any nation to visit, for the purposes of entertainment and leisure, nearly any place on the entire globe. Nations compete for tourists, promoting themselves by showing off their beautiful landscapes and by holding out promises of previously unattainable excitement. As a result, locations and landscapes once considered sublime are becoming increasingly mediated and commodified into both products and elements of national identity constructs.

As digital photographs make possible the instant transmission of any image from its point of origin to any destination, tourism has increasingly become a means through which we simply accumulate experiences to add to our self-constructed, accelerating autobiographies. Tourists seek ever more exciting landscape venues and activities for these experiences, while nations, ever more mindful of the need to attract a global audience, have transformed their sublime native lands and artifacts into mere grist for this ever-accelerating mill. As the authors demonstrate, the nature of tourism in the twenty-first century is transforming both national identity and international consumption, making the one nearly indistinguishable from the other.
