Streets and the Shaping of Towns and Cities, by Michael Southworth, Eran Ben-Joseph

The topic of streets and street design is of compelling interest today as public officials, developers, and community activists seek to reshape urban patterns to achieve more sustainable forms of growth and development. Streets and the Shaping of Towns and Cities traces ideas about street design and layout back to the early industrial era in London suburbs and then on through their institutionalization in housing and transportation planning in the United States. It critiques the situation we are in and suggests some ways out that are less rigidly controlled, more flexible, and responsive to local conditions.

Originally published in 1997, this edition includes a new introduction that addresses topics of current interest including revised standards from the Institute of Transportation Engineers; changes in city plans and development standards following New Urbanist, Smart Growth, and sustainability principles; traffic calming; and ecologically oriented street design.

Enlightening but academic!
By Pierre Gauthier
After a very brief reference to Antiquity and the Renaissance, the authors present the history of suburban street lay-outs in the United States from the 19th century to the present. This overlaps to a great extent with the history of urban planning in general and is thus potentially greatly interesting. Unfortunately, the focus is strictly suburban and no mention is made, say, of Savannah's, Philadelphia's or New York City's famous street patterns.

The authors include a critique of neo-traditional grids, surprising arguments in favour of cul-de-sacs and a pledge in favour of shared streets.

Regrettably, the writing style is tediously academic and technical, with unnecessary long quotations and enumerations. Though the book is abundantly illustrated with plans and photos, the former are extremely small and the latter, in black and white, are poorly reproduced. Indeed, the graphics and lay-out are surprisingly bland given today's computer age expectations.

Overall, this short work appears like a collage of various academic papers and will be worthwhile only to those very highly interested in the history of suburban development in the United States.

excellent introduction to how residential streets evolved
By Jon Hoffman
This books describes the history and evolution of residential streets in the US and Britain. It remains very objective, until the last chapter when the authors push for the shared streets concept. As a transportation planning professional, I found it very informative and compelling. It did the impossible: it changed my mind on the value of cul-de-sacs.

100 to 1 in the Stock Market: A Distinguished Security Analyst Tells How to Make More of Your Investment Opportunities, by Thomas William

In 100 to 1 in the Stock Market, Thomas Phelps discloses the secrets and strategies to increasing your wealth one hundredfold through buy-and-hold investing. Unlike the short-term trading trends that are popular today, Phelps’s highly logical, yet radical approach focuses on identifying compounding machines in public markets, buying their stocks, and holding these investments long term for at least ten years. In this indispensable guide, Phelps analyzes what made the big companies of his day so profitable for the diligent, long-term investor. You will learn how to identify and invest in profitable business models without visible growth ceilings that will quickly increase your earnings. Worth its weight in gold (and then some), 100 to 1 in the Stock Market illuminates the way to the path of long-term wealth for you and your heirs. With this classic, yet highly relevant approach, you will pick companies wisely and watch your investments soar! Thomas William Phelps (1902–1992) spent over 40 years in the investing world working as a private investor, columnist, analyst, and financial advisor. His illustrious investing career began just before the stock market crash in 1929 and lasted into the 1970s. In 1927, he began his career with The Wall Street Journal where he was a reporter, news editor, and chief. Beginning in 1936, he edited Barron’s National Financial Weekly. From 1949 to 1960, he served as an assistant to the chairman and manager of the economics department at Socony Mobil Oil. Following this venture, he was a partner in the investment firm of Scudder, Stevens & Clark until his retirement in 1970.

100 Baggers Are Real Possibilities!
By T. Veale
Of all the books on investing that I've read over the years, this one was at once, the most pleasurable and most challanging to my own beliefs. Mr. Phelps spent over 40 years in and around Wall Street and the world of investing. His activities included being a private investor, columnist, analyst, author and financial advisor. His career spanned from just before the Crash of 1929 to the 70's.
In spite of the the rather glamorous title, the book is actually about Buy and Hold investing. Yes, it is true that you could have made a million dollars by buying any of about 350 stocks he mentions if you had invested $10,000 and just sat back and watched it grow over time! Doesn't sound that exciting, does it? However, I hope you didn't miss the point that he mentions AT LEAST 350 opportunities to have done this! Most of the companies' names will be quite familiar to most readers.
With the histories of many of these companies available, Mr. Phelps goes back in time to examine what it was about these companies that made their potential as great as it was. How can one begin to see what it takes for a company to do well? Well enough to drive its stock from $1.00 to $100.00 over a period of time? This is the heart of Mr. Phelps' book. He comes up with common characteristics that show up in many of the stocks he uses as examples.
Now, what about his strategy of stock ownership? He says that the best way to preserve the wealth you accumulate from investing is to NOT SELL your stocks! Uncle Sam always wants a piece of the pie when you decide to cut it! Mr. Phelps says that no matter how long it takes, it's better to pass on stocks to your heirs than it is to sell them too soon!!
"The reason," he says, "that more people don't make 10,000% on their money is that they don't set their goals high enough!" He says that to sell a stock sooner than that is an admission that you have failed at this goal and haven't done your homework properly! Move over Mr. Lynch! Who wants a Ten Bagger when we can shoot for a 100 Bagger!
Certainly in these times of trading stocks as frequently as heartbeats, his style seems almost radical. After all, who interviews the guy that just buys stocks? CNBC will just ignore you!
Mr. Phelps shows in one example, an investor could have seen the possibilities of a 10,000% return several times during a 40 year span! This same stock returned $100 for every $1 invested if held for 40 years, 36 years, 28 years, 20 years and also just 12 years! In other words, the stock price bounced around alot over the 40 year period. This offered the investor who was shrewd enough to have perceived the possibilities several chances to have caught that 10,000% ride! The company story just got stronger with each price cycle.
We work hard to find stocks that will give superior returns over time. We are willing to risk our money based upon our perception of the company's future. Mr. Phelps develops very good selection skills. These same skills will benefit all long term investors.

Another Book Review From The Aleph Blog
By David Merkel
How can a book be largely true, but not be a good book? By offering people a way to make a lot of money that is hard to do, but portraying it as easy. It can be done, and a tiny number succeed at it, but most of the rest lose money or don't make much in the process. This is such a book.

Let me illustrate my point with an example. Toward the end of every real estate bull market, books come out on how easy it is to make money flipping homes. The books must sell to some degree or the publishers wouldn't publish them. Few actually succeed at it because:

* It's a lot of work
* It's competitive
* It only works well when you have a bunch of people who are uneducated about the value of their homes and are willing to sell them to you cheap, and/or offer you cheap financing while you reposition it.
* Transaction costs are significant, and improvements don't always pay back what you put in.

You could make a lot of money at it, but it is unlikely. Now with this book, "100 to 1 in the Stock Market," the value proposition is a little different:

* Find one company that will experience stunning compound growth over 20-30+ years.
* Invest heavily in it, and don't diversify into a lot of other stocks, because that will dilute your returns.
* Hold onto it, and don't sell any ever, ever, ever! (Forget Lord Rothschild, who said the secret to his wealth was that he always sold too soon.)
* Learn to mention the company name idly in passing, and happily live off of the dividends, should there be any. ;)

Here are the problems. First, identifying the stock will be tough. Less than 1% of all stocks do that. Are you feeling lucky? How lucky? That lucky? Wow.

Second, most people will pick a dog of a stock, and lose a lot of money. If you aren't aware, more than half of all stocks lose money if held for a long time. Most of the rest perform meh. Even if you pick a stock you think has a lot of growth potential, there is often a lot of competition. Will this be the one to survive? Will some new technology obsolete this? Will financing be adequate to let the plan get to fruition without a lot of dilution of value to stockholders.

Third, most people can't buy and hold a single stock, even if it is doing really well. Most succumb to the temptation to take profits, especially when the company hits a rough patch, and all companies hit rough patches, non excepted.

Fourth, when you do tell friends about how smart you are, they will try to dissuade you from your position. So will the financial media, even me sometimes. As Cramer says, "the bear case always sounds more intelligent." Beyond that, never underestimate envy. :(

But suppose even after reading this, you still want to be a home run hitter, and will settle for nothing less. Is this the book for you? Yes. it will tell you what sorts of stocks appreciate by 100 times or more, even if finding them will still be rough.

This book was written in 1972, so it did not have the benefit of Charlie Munger's insights into the "Lollapalooza" effect. What does it take for a stock to compound so much?

* It needs a sustainable competitive advantage. The company has to have something critical that would be almost impossible for another firm to replicate or obsolete.
* It needs a very competent management team that is honest, and shareholder oriented, not self-oriented.
* They have to have a balance sheet capable of funding growth, and avoiding crashing in downturns, while rarely issuing additional shares.
* It has to earn a high return on capital deployed.
* It has to be able to reinvest earnings such that they earn a high return in the business over a long period of time.
* That means the opportunity has to be big, and can spread like wildfire.
* Finally, it implies that not a lot of cash flow needs to be used to maintain the investments that the company makes, leaving more money to invest in new assets.

You would need most if not all of these in order to compound capital 100 times. That's hard. Very hard.

Now if you want a lighter version of this, a reasonable alternative, look at some of the books that Peter Lynch wrote, where he looked to compound investments 10 times or more. Ten-baggers, he called them. Same principles apply, but he did it in the context of a diversified portfolio. That is still very tough to do, but something that mere mortals could try, and even if you don't succeed, you won't lose a ton in the process.

Summary / Who Would Benefit from this Book

You can buy this book to enjoy the good writing, and learn about past investments that did incredibly well. You can buy it to try to hit a home run against a major league pitcher, and you only get one trip to the plate. (Good luck, you will need it.)

But otherwise don't buy the book, it is not realistic for the average person to apply in investing.

Classic Buffettesque book
By blueridgemountains83
This book takes the perspective of the extremely long term investor focused on finding compounding machines in the public markets. It is geared towards the investor who spends the bulk of the investment time on the diligence process rather than trading and who is focused on buy and hold to an extreme (10+ years). The investor who benefits from this book is a rarity in today's hyper short term focused "investor" aka speculator. This book is worth its weight in gold if one can effectively implement the concepts described here. Although it is conceptually simple, the ideas in this book are more powerful than the other investment concepts in the market today.

Whether you're involved in creating an event such as the one listed above, which introduced over 7,000 members of the press and employees of a major airline to a new product, organizing a walk/run for a charitable event, or working on a local blues festival, the event management industry is full of excitement. Certainly no one day in the life of an event manager is ever alike. The event business is a dynamic one that is not free from frustration—but in the end, most event managers believe that they have the best job on earth.

The event and convention industry is a $100 billion industry and currently employs 1.5 million people. This has precipitated the increase in the popularity of studies of event management. For those who are looking for an exciting career, where their organizational skills and attention to detail along with their creativity can be fully utilized, this is an industry that is attracting many of the country's brightest students.

As an author who has written about the hospitality and event industry for the past decade, it has been my privilege to be able to compile this text. I have many people to thank. First and foremost I would like to thank Lynn Van Der Wagen. It has been a rewarding experience to adapt her original text, which was published in Australia. Thanks goes to Lynn for providing a number of photos that were used in this text. To Vern Anthony my Prentice Hall/Pearson editor and his staff who have shown tremendous interest and support for this work. To Ed Sanders, my mentor, who has always believed in me and helped me to grow in the industry. To the many associations, organizations and professionals that freely shared their data and ideas with me. Their examples are what make this text come alive and truly represent the U.S. market.

Most of all I must thank my dear family, who are the reason that I want to work hard and improve myself. Rudy, you're the best. Chad, Clint, and Melissa I appreciate your support. Mom and dad too, you taught me that I can accomplish anything I set my mind on as long as I'm willing to put in the required work.

And finally, a special thanks to all the students and educators who will turn to this book. I have kept you in mind during every phase of writing this manuscript. It is my hope that this book will become a great resource to you. May all your events be successful!

Amazon.com Review
As simulations become increasingly important in nearly all aspects of life, we're finding that combining existing systems is much more efficient than building newer, more complex replacements. Whether your interest is in business, the military, or entertainment or is even more general, Creating Computer Simulation Systems: An Introduction to the High Level Architecture will show you how to use the new standard for building and integrating modular simulation components and systems.

The HLA, adopted by the U.S. Department of Defense, has been years in the making and recently has shot out ahead of its competitors to grab the attention of engineers and designers worldwide. The book contains an overview of the rationale and development of the HLA; an extended, integrated tutorial that demonstrates its power and applicability to real-world problems; advanced topics and exercises; and well-thought-out programming examples.

The book's organization and design are top-notch--the chapters are nearly as modular as the systems they explore, though the meat of the book runs the reader through an extended set of problems focusing on the same model. Designed more as a guide than a reference, it is still well-indexed and a must for managers, technicians, programmers, and anyone else working on building simulations. --Rob Lightner

From the Inside Flap
PrefaceGuidance to the Reader

Suppose you have several computer simulations that you wish to combine to create a single simulation system. For example, you have simulations of various manufacturing machines and simulations of conveyors. You desire to create a simulation of a complete factory floor while minimizing the changes needed to the existing simulations. Or perhaps you have a simulation of air traffic controllers in a region and another simulation of civil aircraft. You wish to create a complete simulation of air traffic in your region, and you expect you'll need to add a simulation of military air traffic later. The High Level Architecture for modeling and simulation, or HLA, is the glue you need to combine existing simulations and accommodate new ones.

The HLA is a software architecture for creating computer models or simulations out of component models or simulations. The HLA has been adopted by the United States Department of Defense (DoD) for use by all its modeling and simulation activities. The HLA is also increasingly finding civilian application. This book is a comprehensive introduction to the HLA.

"High Level Architecture" might seem an ambitious name. When the name was adopted by the DoD, the context was a variety of military simulation programs with little in common and little that could be reused. The HLA was the "high level" architecture from the perspective of the simulation programs of the time. While the HLA contains much that is generic to distributed computer systems, its intended application is to modeling and simulation.Audience

This book will be useful to you if you are one of the following:

The systems engineer or integrator of a simulation system comprising several components

The developer of a simulation or model to be used as a component in a larger simulation system

A decision-maker, someone who has to decide to commit money and resources to a project employing the HLA

A student of simulation in the context of computer science

A student of technology transfer

If you are an integrator or developer, we expect you are an experienced programmer. You'll get the most out of the book if you can run and modify the software presented in the text, but most of the discussion of the HLA is designed to be independent of the code samples. Furthermore, we have provided tools that will allow you to experiment with the HLA without writing software.

Scope and Contents

The text contains tutorial material and exercises with the HLA. The tutorial material can be read without the exercises. The two are differentiated visually, to make it easy to skip the exercises.

What This Book Covers

The text of the book beyond the Preface is divided into the following chapters:

Introduction: defines the HLA

The Story Behind the HLA: the reasons for the definition of the HLA and its development, how it came to be, how the HLA has been promoted as an architecture, and why it has succeeded

An Overview of the HLA: the HLA considered as a software architecture, its large pieces, its chief functions, and some things it is not

The Sushi Restaurant Federation: the beginning of a tutorial on using the HLA to integrate a set of simulations in substantial technical detail

Synchronizing the Federation: a continuation of the tutorial

A Sample Implementation: a guide to a complete implementation of the simulation system developed in The Sushi Restaurant Federation and Synchronizing the Federation

Extending the Federation for a New Purpose: a tutorial that builds on The Sushi Restaurant Federation and Synchronizing the Federation

Advanced Topics: further technical detail to be approached after you've read the tutorial parts

This book aims to be a tutorial, rather than an exhaustive reference. The index will make this book useful as a reference as well, but our main aim is to guide you in applying the HLA in the most common circumstances.

Benefits greatly from the absence of alternatives
By L. Mihalkovic
As other reviewers pointed out, the book is basically not a match for how complex the HLA and RTI are. Compare this for example with OpenGL where the complexity of the topic is equally matched with books that do cover it in depth. Despite its widespread use for sim, remains a poorly documented topic that people have to learn through trial and errors.

OK, but not great
By William D. Back
HLA has been around now for a long time and I think it's telling that this is the only real book on the topic. If you are working with HLA, this is a good reference, but you will still need some serious time with the documentation for whatever RTI you end up using. I suspect that some day HLA will be replaced with something better, but it doesn't seem to be coming soon.

Best book on HLA available
By B. Cain
I think most of the negative reviews are actually against HLA and due to a lack of experience with component-based simulation system development ... not the book itself.

With the lack of resources out there, I really appreciate this resource.

I've just begun to read the book and find it very easily read. I'll post another review as I progress.

Prognosis: Poor: One Doctor's Personal Account of the Beauty and the Perils of Modern Medical Training, by Frances Southwick D.O

Prognosis: Poor is a poignant snapshot of one physician's medical training. Frances Southwick, D.O. explores the highs and lows (more often the lows) of the process of becoming a doctor. She delivers colorful detail inside the mind of one trainee, herself, through undergraduate school, medical school and residency. The book focuses most heavily on the capstone of family medicine training: three years of residency in a well-respected Pittsburgh hospital. Dr. Southwick courageously explores her most difficult moments of self-doubt and hopelessness, but wraps the text up with a chapter cataloguing current problems in the training process and how they might be remedied. This memoir highlights the problem of depression in physicians and physicians-in-training as a looming, large, current problem.

Honest, bold, eye-opening - a TRUE account of what it is really like to be a medicine resident.
By Becky
Simply put, I loved this book. I am writing this review from a Pharmacist perspective. Odd, right? I've worked at a Level I Trauma Center teaching hospital as the graveyard shift pharmacist for the last 7 years. I'm the one that gets the call at 02:00 AM from the desperate medicine resident who can't figure out how to order acetaminophen. I'm also the one that pages the intern on their 25th hour of call to let them know that they just entered a lethal dose of vecuronium into the computer system. If you "Google" my hospital's medical residency program, you'll see words like "malignant"; "tyranny", "intimidation". Let me just say, my hospital is nationally recognized. We are GOOD at what we do, and our expectation is to stay that way. BUT, I have seen first hand how poorly our medical/surgical residents are treated.
This book is a quick read and an imperative one for anyone considering becoming a doctor, going into/or currently in a residency program. Honestly, I've even recommended this book to my Pharmacist Interns that are considering a Pharmacist Residency and/or Fellowship. Dr. Southwick delves into subjects that no one else has really been brave enough to address - mental illness, suicide, extreme psychological stress. She does it SO WELL. She addresses the hard stuff and finds room to "keep it light". It is relatable even if you aren't in the medical field.
I hope this book ellicits change. I hope this book reaches a resident that just needs someone to tell them they are not alone. Right this moment, one of our medicine residents is admitted to my hospital for suicidal ideation. I am so glad someone finally had the courage to write about this aspect of residency training.

AllThat Glitters is Not Gold
By Desert Wolverine
For those who are contemplating a profession in medicine, this is a must read. Medical education is grueling physically and emotionally and financially expensive. For some, the cost may be too high. This biography, tells about one physician's journey in becoming a member of the The House of God. This book would be an excellent choice for a medical student or resident physician's book discussion group. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this biography and wish there were more resources to help those on this arduous journey of medical education. Thank you Dr. Southwick for sharing your story

A MUST READ!
By Miriam B. Harris
As a person who has spent her career in higher education, I read this book with interest. The story has some similar themes for those pursuing a PhD or EdD. When posing questions to doctoral committees about what felt like unreasonable expectations, the common response to a student has been, "I had to do it this way....so you must too." And, sadly, very little has changed.

I think this book should be required reading for all individuals considering a career in medicine, and for the faculty who are responsible for their medical training. Students are human beings, first and foremost, and should, from my perspective, be treated as such. The demands that faculty and staff currently place on doctors is inhumane, leading to some very sad outcomes, as Dr. Southwick illustrated in this book.
If many many individuals read this book, perhaps we'll form a groundswell of support for change. Such would be my wish.

My thanks to Dr. Southwick for making time in your full schedule to write this book. I'm most appreciative.

The Handbook of Convertible Bonds: Pricing, Strategies and Risk Management, by Jan De Spiegeleer, Wim Schoutens

This is a complete guide to the pricing and risk management of convertible bond portfolios. Convertible bonds can be complex because they have both equity and debt like features and new market entrants will usually find that they have either a knowledge of fixed income mathematics or of equity derivatives and therefore have no idea how to incorporate credit and equity together into their existing pricing tools.

Part I of the book covers the impact that the 2008 credit crunch has had on the markets, it then shows how to build up a convertible bond and introduces the reader to the traditional convertible vocabulary of yield to put, premium, conversion ratio, delta, gamma, vega and parity. The market of stock borrowing and lending will also be covered in detail. Using an intuitive approach based on the Jensen inequality, the authors will also show the advantages of using a hybrid to add value - pre 2008, many investors labelled convertible bonds as 'investing with no downside', there are of course plenty of 2008 examples to prove that they were wrong. The authors then go onto give a complete explanation of the different features that can be embedded in convertible bond.

Part II shows readers how to price convertibles. It covers the different parameters used in valuation models: credit spreads, volatility, interest rates and borrow fees and Maturity.

Part III covers investment strategies for equity, fixed income and hedge fund investors and includes dynamic hedging and convertible arbitrage.

Part IV explains the all important risk management part of the process in detail.

This is a highly practical book, all products priced are real world examples and numerical examples are not limited to hypothetical convertibles. It is a must read for anyone wanting to safely get into this highly liquid, high return market.

Too many errors and omissions in calculations
By Sindhu
The book has too many egregious errors in the formula used for various calculations. For starters, when calculating the greeks, the author calculates some of them in fractions and some of them in percentages but doesn't indicate a % next to calculations that are percentages. Calculation for Present Value of a risky bond is wrong. The starting equation for deducing λ is also wrong. Having wasted a whole bunch of time identifying and correcting these errors, I refuse to read this book any further. I've simply wasted my time and money on this book. For the records, this is not a matter of me taking note of errata. This is sloppy work on the part of the author and the editor of the book.

An excellent Primer on convertible bonds
By Jean-Sylvestre
This book is a very detailed and accessible review of the convertible bond market. The author presents the asset class from a practionner point of view with real world examples without forgetting the academic/quant theoretical pricing approach at the same time. A must read for whoever works in the convertible bonds space. This book is always on my desk!

A good base to work from
By Marty K.
I found this book quite true to the title "...Basics" - as it is a good base to work from. We used some of the ideas and points to build up our own structure. This was made easier by the straightforward terms the author used.

Looking forward to the follow-up! Something like "Church Management Guidelines/Tips and Tricks/Stepping Stones..."??

A definite good buy, thank you.
