A Respectable Translation

For years, translations of the collection of writings known as the Old Testament have been problematic. Some are made from the Masoretic text, others from the Septuagint, still others from combinations of the two. Recently, some have even been produced using only various English translations which were simply sifted together. Most often, the reader never knows what was used or where a text differed from another.
This problem was somewhat rectified in the production of the Tanakh, an English translation made entirely from the Masoretic text. In it, the three distinct sections of the "Old Testament" were broken down into their respective groupings: the Torah (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), the Prophets, or Nevi'Im, being the writings of the Prophets (Isaiah, Ezekiel, etc.), and the Writings, or Ketuvim, being the literary works (Ecclesiastes, Job, and so forth). The Tanakh was sold both in a unified copy and in three volumes; this is the second of the three volumes.
Being entirely composed of the Masoretic text translated into English, there are still problems with the base text itself, as the Masoretic text was composed in the ninth century B.C.E. by a group of scholars seeking textual unity. However, at least this is known to the reader at the outset. The question of which base text was used being satisfied, the reader is free to ponder the text presented on a higher level.
The word choices made by the translators is quite good. The footnotes are informative and there is an honesty to the work not commonly found when such material is translated, as when the meaning of a Hebrew word is not known, it is declared as unknown. The language is alive, and while it does not match the stylistic subtlety of Mr. Lattimore's New Testament translation, it is certainly an improvement over most of the pseudo-epic style of previous translators.
The text of Isaiah alone makes this volume worthy of merit. Strong and forceful, red in the face and fist shaking in the air, there is an urgency to the language; an urgency often lost in other translations. Here are the words of a man convinced of the sins of his people and acting accordingly. While the levels of Isaiah are somewhat obscured (many scholars now think Isaiah was actually written by three different authors, one adding onto the next) the effect is nonetheless very powerful.
On a more mundane level, the book is much easier to read than a standard Bible. The text is clear and of a size common to most books. It is not arranged in those ridiculous, space saving columns so common in most Bibles; rather, paragraphs are used. What makes it even better is that even though the line numbers are used, they are not dominant and so can be easily ignored. Best of all, the translators took some note as to where a story obviously ends and a new one begins, and they broke the paragraphs accordingly (even if it did not agree with the line and section numbers). By themselves, these reasons alone would nearly justify reading this edition.
Truth be told, translated literature always loses some meaning and a great deal of nuance when compared to the original. The only way to get the full force of any text is to be able to read it in the original, and even then there is still the mountain of cultural and historical separation left to climb. In reality, few among us (very few outside the Jewish faith) have the ability to read classical Hebrew; thus we must make due with translations. As these go, there are few that address this particular text better than the one at hand (or the Tanakh as a whole). Overall, this would be a fine book for all who have an interest in the texts that comprise the "Old Testament."

For the third edition, the author fundamentally revised and newly organized the contents of the work. Nevertheless, the intention has been to preserve the style of the previous editions, namely to focus on the fundamentals enabling the reader to analyse further problems.

A must-have for serious work

This classic text book on Structure-Borne sound transmission is a must-have for anyone in the field of noise & vibration. The book is relatively easily to follow. It is full of very useful and practical information. It is highly recommended as a reference for graduate students and practicing engineers.

This very comprehensive book is well explained and detailed, from the basic sound propagation formulae to control room treatment. It is also useful in our acoustic consulting activities and technical suport for solutions, as "rain on the roof noise" and "foot-fall noise" at residential and business buildings

Loiane Groner lives in S�o Paulo, Brazil and has over 8 years of software development experience. While at university, she demonstrated great interest in IT. She worked as a teaching assistant for 2 and a half years specialising in teaching algorithms, data structures, and computing theory. She represented her university at the ACM International Collegiate Programming Contest, Brazilian Finals (South America Regionals), and also worked as Student Delegate of SBC (Brazilian Computing Society) for 2 years. Examples too Simple, Explanations too short...a missed opportunity.

Sencha Architect (SA) App Development is a very short book (about 93 pages of actual content). I am new to Ext JS but have been doing software development for over 10 years. So, I think I am aware of my own limitations vs limitations in the content of this book.

It covers the basic interface, creating a simple Sencha Ext app, simple sencha touch app, some tips/tricks and then publshing and packaging and other resources. Overall this is not a beginners book. But you could pick it up and follow it. Groner is trying to provide some insight on using Architect vs regurgitating online help descriptions, which I can appreciate. But I didn't feel like I was getting insight from an experienced Sencha developer on how to use SA in an intelligent way beyond simple, single web pages.

Groner attempts to briefly explain MVC (just 1 page), but I find it a clumsy definition and still left me bewildered. I do know what MVC is, but her definition is poorly presented. She has to mention MVC though because SA is an MVC oriented development approach. But explanations are short.. for everything. Quite often, I found myself asking "why do you have to do that ?".

So, this book lacks insight from an experienced developer about developing meaningful applications. The 2 examples she provides are overly simple and lack depth. I can understand you don't want to confuse the reader with complex examples but without meaningful examples, and taking the time to actually explain things, you can't appreciate the capabilities of SA and the development approach you need to take. The book is afterall called "App Development", not "Overly simple examples for clicking buttons"

The examples are for beginners, but it requires that you know a Ext JS to an intermediate level. Groner could have included more sophisticated examples to walk through but I think she was trying to appeal to a wide audience. But in doing so, this book misses the mark in terms providing insight into using SA. You would gain almost as much from the online videos than using this book. The screenshots are not very well set out, and at first are confusing. Frankly, she could have used more page space to improve the flow. There is clear numbering of the order of steps in the screen shots for doing the tasks. Groner points out where things go to accomplish the objective and there is not much else beyond briefly explaining it to support the MVC principles.

I was left with more questions about SA after reading it. The back cover is a bit misleading as the topics are covered, but not to an extent that you can get through a meaningful application.

So, should you get this book ? NO. There is a wealth of online information from Sencha, forums and blogs that you can glean to accomplish the same thing.

The examples on the book are too basic. I recommend Sencha Touch 2 and Learning Ext JS 4 before you read this book. You will get more out of this book that way, At least I did.

Lee Karr is a devoted fan of the films of George A. Romero, in particular Day of the Dead, and has formed close friendships with many of the film’s cast and crew. Over the years he has contributed photos and liner notes for DVD and Blu-ray releases in both the U.S. and Japan for Day of the Dead and Dawn of the Dead. He has written for magazines including Horrorhound and Famous Monsters of Filmland, and previously interviewed George A. Romero for homepageofthedead.com. He lives in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is his first book.

Greg Nicotero is executive producer of AMC’s hit series, The Walking Dead. An acclaimed actor, director and special-effects creator, his wildly inventive work has earned him legendary status within the horror genre. Since landing his break as assistant to Tom Savini on Day of the Dead, he's gone on to enjoy a long and illustrious career. He is the co-founder of Hollywood's prestigious KNB EFX Group and the winner of four Emmy Awards. He lives in Los Angeles, California, with his wife and two children.

every dead has its' day: great book!

the making of george romero's day of the dead by lee karr is wonderful. like many such books, this one is a labor of love, and the author even shares a picture of the birthday cake his mother made him for his fifteenth birthday with dr. tongue drawn in icing. exhaustively and lovingly researched, karr has been given access to the archives of greg nicotero, tom savini, and others. He puts together the evolution of day from george romero's epic first vision, to the small, more personal, darker and more beautiful, final product (i'm super glad we got this one).

as with any good making-of book, it's great fun to read about the goodwill of the cast and crew, its' inventiveness and tirelessness, and the hardships of working down in that mine. but there's also plenty of tales of conflict and disagreement, largely surrounding producer david small (who comes across as a little arrogant and self-important, and who clearly has no love--or respect--for romero), and director of photography michael gornick, who was in the midst of ending his working relationship with george romero, and not in overly amiable fashion. also, tom savini and his exploits are well-recorded, entertaining and telling.

filled with wonderful interviews--all the cast and crew, pretty much--incredible photographs (see a gaylen ross visiting the set), annotated filming schedule, and just endless amounts of day of the dead esoterica, lee karr's making of day of the dead is a fabulous, informative, entertaining examination of romero's wonderful, occasionally overlooked classic.

Worth reading if you are a fan

If you, like I, are a fan of this particular entry in the Romero zombie trilogy, then really, you have to add this book to your library. Most of the major "how they did it" points will be well-familiar already to most fans, but there are some new things to learn. The author takes you through a virtual day by day account of the filming (A "Diary of the Dead," if you will -- sorry, had to do it). Certain members of the cast and crew don't come off particularly well, and you'll finish the book somewhat surprised that this movie actually got made.

An enjoyable, if not in places particularly well-written account of, IMHO, the second-best movie of the trilogy (after NOTLD, of course). Again, if you are a fan of this movie, get this book.

A great book that exhaustively covers the filming of Day of the Dead. Full of interviews and behind the scenes info, and is quite possibly the best book I have read devoted to a single film. I wish Dawn of the Dead would get a similar treatment. This was truly outstanding and you can tell that Lee Karr really was working on this as a labor of love.

Very in-depth text but lacks accessibility, clarity, & inspiration

I just finished an undergrad-level college course that used this book (3rd edition). Extremely in-depth on the topics that it covers, using formal mathematical notation throughout to present the algorithms. As many others have said, it's very math-heavy and I'd recommend that anyone thinking about learning from this book should already have a strong background in especially discrete math, but should also have some familiarity with single-variable calculus and probability. The appendices do a brief math review (on discrete math & probability) but are not a substitute for learning the math for the first time.

The book is essentially best described as a detailed, mathematically-oriented analysis of algorithmic theory and covers a wide variety of topics. Proofs of various concepts are built up with lemmas throughout as well, and many of the exercises in the book often ask for a proof to show that something is correct. The authors do provide a Solutions file online, but for only some exercises up through chapter 26 when it has 35 chapters.

The book more than "combines rigor and comprehensiveness" as it says on the back, and it will almost certainly be an indispensable reference in the future for anyone planning to work (or is already working) in a computer science-related field, but it also has some notable drawbacks as well, not the least of which is the title. A genuine "Introduction" to algorithms would've been either more accessible (with less math) or substantially shorter (at approximately half the page count or less), or both. As it is, the book's title could have more accurately reflected its density with something more like "Algorithm Theory In Depth" or "Algorithm Analysis". Fortunately the book includes an extensive index that lists out nearly every sub-topic that it covers for quick reference.

Some of the notable drawbacks include:
- It often shows that it was written by 4 different authors, as some topics are explained better than others (the graph algorithms overall were explained well) while others lacked sufficient clarity (recurrence relations, sorting in general, greedy algorithms, amortized analysis, NP completeness).
- Like many other academia-oriented textbooks, it suffers from overuse of the infamous pretentious phrase "it is easy to see," paticularly when it's not easy to see what the author is talking about.
- Chapter 4 suffers from a lack of explanation on solving recurrences by the recursion-tree and substitution methods, with insufficient examples.
- No exercises or content to help with actually implementing an algorithm in a programming language, because putting an algorithm into practice should be just as important as the theory.
- The authors write in the preface that the book is aimed at teachers, students, professionals, & their colleagues (!). A book that attempts to cater to both students and the authors' colleagues at the same time would appear to be paradoxical, right?
- Dry, dispassionate wording that fails to inspire the reader to continue reading the text, and continue learning past this book as well.

Despite the drawbacks it's a good, very dense & in-depth reference on the subject, but for those learning algorithms for the first time, I'd recommend one of these other books first that explain the concepts more clearly in plain English and then coming back to CLRS afterwards. Just pick the one based on the language you're most familiar with. I own copies of all of these books btw (a few in digital formats, not all of them in print) and can personally speak to their quality in offering clearer, easier-to-understand explanations of algorithms.

- Data Structures and Algorithms in Java (2nd Edition), by Robert Lafore

- Problem Solving with Algorithms and Data Structures Using Python SECOND EDITION, by Bradley Miller & David Ranum

If you're a college student that has to buy this book for your algorithms class like I had to, there are a variety of free resources online that should make the subject easier to learn along the way, like the MIT Open CourseWare resources on algorithms (course numbers 6.006 and 6.046), StackOverflow, GeeksforGeeks, and the sheer quantity of lecture slides available online at other colleges & universities. Coursera regularly has a free class on the subject as well.

Magisterial, and impenetrable

I'm a professor of Computer Science at a respected teaching university, and have been the principal instructor of our introductory algorithms class for the past several years. I used Cormen (doesn't *everyone*?) for a year or two, but have finally relegated it to recommended-text status.

On the plus side, the text is, as my review title says, magisterial. It covers the field comprehensively and authoritatively. When one of the authors is the "R" in RSA, and others are well-known names, you can count on the text's expertise and accuracy. I've never found an error in this text.

BUT.... The pedagogy needs work. Explanations tend to jump too quickly to pure mathematical notation, and there are often insufficient concrete examples. The pseudocode has one-letter variable names that appear at times to be randomly generated :). At least the latest edition fixes what was a baffling indentation style. If you took a sample of 100 CS undergrads and asked them to learn algorithms principally from this text, I'd venture a guess that only the 10 brightest could do so. And even they'd be baffled at times.

I apologize for having to offer such an "emperor is naked" review to such a highly respected work, but it's time to consider more carefully pedagogical texts in the undergrad market.

That book everyone knows as CLRS.

This is the quintessential text for algorithms and many universities use this book in their "Computer Science 101" course. It was required in my first year at the University of Toronto (late 90's). It presents a treatment of the most common algorithms and the techniques needed to analyze them.

I recall struggling with the subject matter, despite having worked with computers since childhood and completing the requisite high-school mathematics courses. The approach taken by the authors is fairly direct; there is little hand-holding, although there are 100 pages of appendices covering pre-requisites.

I had my moments of wanting to hurl it across the room, but it remained amongst the few texts I held onto, thinking it might be useful or enlightening in the future, relative to the burden of lugging it around. I've since upgraded from the 2nd edition to the 3rd, and occasionally pick it up, read a few sections or a chapter and complete some exercises.

Each topic in the book is covered in the same way:
- Explanation of problem or concept.
- Example(s) and/or diagram(s)
- Mathematical proofs, where applicable.
- Problem set

Tip: Concrete Mathematics by Knuth is good primer, establishing the specific discrete and continuous mathematical techniques underpinning the algorithms, and filling several knowledge gaps. Also, Cormen has published a more approachable version of this text ("Algorithms Unlocked") which which be more appropriate to some.

None of the solutions to the exercises are provided in the book, but a few are available at the books website: mitpress.mit.edu/books/introduction-algorithms.

In the still of the night, do not rely on pot luck

Josef Pischel's recent book, Distilling Fruit Brandy, is the clearest book I have seen on this subject. He covers everything from picking to bottling, including fermentation. He is the Director of the Rotholz Agricultural School, and teaches fruit horticulture. This practical book presumes no prior knowledge. The mathematics are simple, few and well explained, nothing beyond 9th grade. The few tools are well presented and are easily used. Unless you get personal instruction, it is the simplest way to get started.

Pischel begins with a solid discussion of his specialty, the fruits and roots themselves. He covers a lot of ground in just a few pages on varieties, characteristics and quality. His basic message is that of a fruit grower: While fermentation and distillation are ancient methods for using overproduction, windfall crops, or seconds not fit for the market, his method strives for the highest quality Schnapps. He will give you tips at every turn to do so. More importantly, he shows you how to avoid the hazards of bad bacteria and other unpleasantness.

If the idea of fermentation seems particularly daunting (it should not), or if you simply want a quick start, jump right to distillation by starting with wine. Otherwise, he moves into various fermentation vessels, their cleaning and care. He takes you through yeasts and bacteria, focusing on the use of the all-important pure select yeast. He shows how to monitor each phase, including temperature. His formatting and presentation of technical topics is the cleanest I have seen. They are a pleasure to use.

Pischel explains the use of enzymes for better flavor, and acids for safer protection. I cannot tell you how important acid is in the quality of life. In taking you through each part of the still, he teaches both principle and process. That brilliant shine of the copper still is not cosmetic. It must be maintained to absorb sulfur and cyanide. Holy Snuffy Smith! You will appreciate the detailed steps he presents for thorough cleaning.

Pischel covers both raw and fine distilling, first quick and the other with a fine tuning touch. He has a section on distilling errors, for when things go wrong. Measuring alcohol and adjusting it finishes the process. He moves into filtration for storage, including bottling. His process does not involve wood barrel aging.

When all the work is done, he relaxes into the pleasant questions of tasting. And not with that age old snifter, but a smaller, stemmed brandy glass with a bell bottom, narrowing neck and flared top.

All this content is displayed in 124 pages. The remainder is on special topics and brandies. The book is published by Schiffer, printed on heavy gloss stock for heavy use. It is hard bound and stitched to lay flat.

This book hits the mark

This is a high quality book in a sea of mediocre texts on distilled beverages. The aim here seems to be the dedicated enthusiast or pro who is willing to take the time to read somewhat technical material in order to render a superb product. The packaging and design of the book are fantastic and well illustrated. I've come to the distilling world from beer brewing and have found many of the popular texts to be either overly kitsch or light on technical information but this book is an exception. I really wish there were more like it.

Ahh that germanic efficiency...

a well written technical manual that takes the "art" out of making booze. no more vague descriptions of how to make spirits, this is a precise and exacting description of how to succeed. if you want artsy, just leave out some steps.

I will say that it does not have much in the way of recipes for brewing, but then the book is called DISTILLING fruit brandy, and that is exactly where it excels.

As a bonus it's not written "over your head" so it's technical but not TOO technical to understand even for a simple American. If you wanna make booze, this is worth the read and should be kept for diagnosing problems or to improve your product.

Another excellent resource from Bruce Bartlett. The updates add important developments in the audio field. An excellent first resource for undergrads, hobbyists, or people just starting in the industry.

One note: the companion website directions are very confused. There are three different website addresses referenced (inside title page, preface, and back cover), none of which have links to companion audio files. Hopefully this will be resolved or a passcode provided to 6th edition buyers for the 5th edition website.

An Excellent First Text – And For Many People, It May Be Enough

This sixth edition of Bruce and Jenny Bartlett’s Practical Recording Techniques is my first and I’m often cautious about ‘name’ books that have been around awhile. Have they kept pace technically or are they just coasting on the authors’ reputations?

In this case the answer is clear: ‘Practical Recording Techniques’ works because it’s well-written and honest with its audience – whether amateur beginner recording at home, semi pro or professional engineer starting out, the information is solid and detailed, adaptable, and hands-on, and the tone is respectful and positive throughout.

I’ve done a fair amount of amateur and semi-pro recording from my days cabling cassette decks together, analog studios, to full in-the-box production and I thoroughly enjoyed reading and hearing what the authors had to say.

It covers the ‘textbook’ basics of acoustics and recording equipment without reading like a textbook, and that’s means I’m far more likely to retain a lot more. Mics and placement, mixing, the signal chain are all covered with a skew towards digital recording, which was probably not as prevalent in earlier editions.

Be sure to download the audio examples from the companion site – from the opening chapters illustrating 6 different kinds of recording setups, the audio tracks provide a necessary context – you can’t learn recording by simply reading about it (or listening to other recordings, but that’s a necessary interim step).

Two things I especially like about the tracks is 1) they’re introduced by either Bruce or Jenny and they illustrate complex concepts simply: meaning demonstrating frequency response, echo and reverb using a voice, as opposed to an entire band.

Practical in this case means more ‘hands on’ and less theory and gear minutiae. There’s plenty of detail, but it’s never at the expense of clear instruction and tools just as applicable to the pro studio as the amateur bedroom.

Finally, an in-depth discussion and recommendation of computer recording and specific hard drives that goes well beyond the typical “make sure you get the fastest hard drive you can afford.

And I got a real kick out of the ‘mic-in-a-wastebucket trick’ featuring what looks exactly like my Behringer bass amp!
