Higly readable coverage of an area of great current interest

I wouldn't be aware of this book had I not served as a reader on a dissertation in the area of robot ethics. To an non-expert in the immediate field it provides what well-rounded coverage. It is surprisingly easy to read; only a couple of chapters come across as a little dry. As I went through it, I noted Blay Whitby's Chapter 15 as particularly strong; Steve Petersen's Chapter 18 as quite brilliant; Rob Sparrow's Chapter 19 as particularly interesting philosophically; and Anthony Beavers's Chapter 21 as a great discussion of whether it will be sufficient for robots merely to perform as thinking and caring entities while actually being neither in any real sense.

Unnecessarily High Jargon-to-Content Ratio

Although this collection of chapters by disparate authors does give a flavor of the current state of thinking about robot ethics, it requires an unnecessarily intense effort by the reader. You will repeatedly slog through diagrams or technical jargon, only to realized that this was completely unnecessary to make the chapter's simple and usually obvious points. This is not the case for all of the chapters, but it is for enough of them to quickly become annoying. Also, to be frank, Robot Ethics, while still worth buying, contains too many chapters that would be uninteresting to anyone who already takes the Strong AI Hypothesis (that robots can become as intelligent and conscious as humans) for granted.
I believe, however, that this book would excel as a primer for research students who need to acquire a sense of what is and isn't publishable in the embryonic field of robot ethics.

If you're not a student, and you're merely looking for a survey on current thinking on robot morality, you might be better served by starting with Moral Machines: Teaching Robots Right from Wrong by Wallach and Allen (who wrote Chapter 4 of Robot Ethics). They champion a bottom-up (i.e. training) approach to instilling ethics in robots. Or, for a top-down approach, try the considerately succinct Robot Nation: Surviving the Greatest Socio-Economic Upheaval of All Time by Neilson.

Most helpful book I've read as novice in the field

This book actually changed my view of whether or not robots will some day become thinking machines and, more interestingly, regardless whether or not they actually do care about us whether we should treat them with some modicum of respect as if they did. If you want to begin to think seriously about Robot Ethics, this is the perfect place to begin. It would also work well as a text book in an ethics class.

The first book in many years to grip me like this. A TRUE page turner.

Absolutely Terrific !!!
I was asked to review this and to be honest I wasn't keen. Sci-Fi and Fantasy are more my cup of tea but I received this and on a long journey with nothing to do I reluctantly started to read this. The hours flew past !!! I couldn't wait to get some more personal time to read more. What a brilliant book. It played out in my head like a film and it should definately be made into one. A cross between Day of the Jackel and the Bourne Identity.
Plot is great and well thought out, imagery is superb. For me this author is a revelation, as like I said I'd not normally read this genre but from now on he will be the exception. Good effort and more please !!!!

Potential Lost in the Details

Mr. Lovejoy either is a commercial pilot himself or did a lot of research, because the technical aspects of the novel are very detailed. Too detailed, really, almost as though the author wants to show off his expertise. It's the equivalent of a Western novel where every step of the hero saddling his horse is explained in excruciating detail. Because I'm an avid aviation buff, believe me, there has to be A LOT of detail in an aviation story for me to lose interest.

The novel started out well, with an interesting super-terrorist theme. But then it seemed to become bogged down in the details of the first crash (I assume there are others, but I didn't get that far). I know I'm losing interest when I start skimming, and that's what I did as the aftermath of the crash was explaining in, yes, excruciating detail.

Finally, I gave up. The rest of the novel may be great. Maybe I'll continue to skim and see what I find.

Well researched, plotted and written

From the opening scene, Ben hooks you into his well-researched and constructed world. It's clear he's done his homework across the various industries and organizations that are involved in the plot of his book. Naturally there are a few places where credibility is stretched to breaking point, but for such a well-plotted and written book they're more than forgivable. I'm waiting impatiently for Ben's next volume, trailed at the end of 11/9.

About the Author
Lawrence (Larry) R. Frey is a Professor in the Department of Communication at the University of Colorado at Boulder. His teaching and research interests include group interaction, applied communication (communication activism, communication and social justice, communication and community studies, and health communication), and communication research methods (both quantitative and qualitative). His research seeks to understand how participation (especially by those who are underresourced and marginalized) in collective communicative practices makes a difference in people s individual, relational, and collective lives. He received a B.S. from Northwestern University and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Prior to coming to the University of Colorado at Boulder, he served as department chair at The University of Memphis and as a faculty member at Loyola University Chicago and at Wayne State University. He is the author/editor of 14 books, 3 special journal issues, and more than 60 published book chapters and journal articles. He is the recipient of 11 distinguished scholarship awards, including the 2000 Gerald M. Phillips Award for Distinguished Applied Communication Scholarship from the National Communication Association (NCA); the 2004, 2003, and 2000 Ernest Bormann Research Award from NCA s Group Communication Division, for, respectively, the edited texts, Group Communication in Context: Studies of Bona Fide Groups (2nd ed.), New Directions in Group Communication, and The Handbook of Group Communication Theory and Research (coedited with Dennis S. Gouran and Marshall Scott Poole); a 1999 Special Recognition Award from NCA s Applied Communication Division for an edited special issue of the Journal of Applied Communication Research on Communication and Social Justice Research; the 1998 National Jesuit Book Award (Professional Studies Category) and the 1988 Distinguished Book Award from NCA s Applied Communication Division for his coauthored text (with Mara B. Investigating Communication Offers Excellent Overview

I highly recommend this book to those seeking an introduction to communication research methods. This book is creative and well organized. Concepts are explicated with "real studies" and the concepts' definitions are clearly conveyed. The numerous examples highlight the breadth and depth of research in the field of communication studies while helping the reader to answer the "so what" questions about research methods. I enjoy using this book with my undergraduate research methods classes and my students speak favorably about their experience using it.

Solid Methods Book - Simple, Straightforward, Concise.

Some people like to talk trash on this book, but let me tell you something. GARY KREPS knows what the hell he is talking about. Kreps aka Kreperino aka The Krepman aka Biggie Kreps keeps it real and keeps it concise in this book. It provides some pretty decent examples and explains things in a straightforward manner. Would definitely recommend this book for any grad level methods class. Also Kreps is a cool dude. If you ever see Kreps tell him ole Reggie Thistleton says Hello.

Don't be fooled by the slender spine of this unusual book. Rollins, the Irish philosopher/po-mo theologian who has previously published How (Not) to Speak of God and The Fidelity of Betrayal, upends some of Christians' most cherished platitudes about God in his newest outing. He cautions readers that the book is not to be read quickly, for acquiring information, but to be savored slowly for possible transformation. Mostly, the book lives up to this billing. Rollins recasts some of the most familiar parables of and stories about Jesus, sometimes subversively—as when he proposes a version of feeding the 5,000 that shows Jesus and his disciples pigging out on meager resources while the multitudes look on, starving. His point? That Christians are the body of Christ, and when we oppress the poor and hoard scarce resources, we are saying that represents the kind of God we serve. Although not all of the parables work equally well—some could use further illumination—Rollins is a tremendously talented writer and thinker whose challenges to Christianity-as-usual should be well-received by the emergent church crowd, if not beyond. Parables for the Present Day

According to a recent article about heart/brain communication, research shows that fibers in the nervous system are 90% dedicated to sending messages to the brain and only 10% going out from the brain. "Neurally speaking," states Rollin McCraty, PhD, "the heart sends far more information to the brain than the brain sends to the heart." If that is the case I need to read more books that connect straight with my heart, not just ones that simply stimulate my thinking. Peter Rollins new book, "The Orthodox Heretic: And Other Impossible Tales" does just that.

In 33 short chapters Rollins weaves tales designed to bathe readers in the possibilities of faith, love, freedom and forgiveness. And in the same way that Jesus told parables to shock his listeners; Rollins uses this literary technique to poke his readers. I ended several of the sections with a laugh, a chill, or an audible gasp as a point was driven home.

He follows each tale with some of his own processing that went into the story as a jumping off place for reflection. This is helpful in understanding Rollins thoughts, but the processing doesn't end with reading the book. These tales stick with you. Several times I found myself grabbing a friend or family member and saying, "Sit down, you have to listen to this story!" as I read aloud to them and entered into meaningful conversations. This book will serve as an excellent resource for discussion groups as they engage with these narratives.

Most Creative Christian Release of the Year

Who else is doing this stuff? Peter Rollins expands some ideas from his other books to create over 30 original parables that will make you think harder about tenants of your faith you may take for granted. This book is a beautiful work of art as well as a finely crafted device for helping communicate transcend truth where normal language sometimes breaks down. As Jesus realized, some things can only be communicated via story, our modern systematic theologies often fail to articulate the most profound aspects of the way of Jesus. Rollins commentaries are also very helpful, though I would recommend reflecting on each story yourself before moving on to Rollins explanations, surely Rollins would welcome his work speaking to different people in different ways. Part of the beauty of parables is there is usually an ambiguity that makes the medium of the parable or short story all the more valuable. In my opinion, this is the most thought provoking book I have come across in quite a long time, and is a great intro to Rollins' (timely) thinking.

It's so good that you need to keep putting it down.

Orthodox Heretic might not be Pete Rollins' most challenging book, but it is surely his most powerful. Having shown his academic chops in his previous two books, Pete shifts gears to show us some true subversion, along with the depth and breadth of his hermeneutic.

This is a collection of parables, each of which acted like a tiny explosive device as they detonated slowly and successively, crumbling my understanding of the world and of Christianity, and showing me something much more beautiful, messy, powerless, and true. Here, Pete displays creative and courageous exegetical skill, his radical interpretation of the essense of Jesus' teachings and practice, and his deep understanding of human nature. What he leaves us with is a kind of Christianity that supercedes belief: a life of love and sacrifice and fidelity.

So on second thought, perhaps it is Pete's most challenging book: not challenging to understand, but extremely challenging to live (and I'm sure it was quite challenging to write). Because in it, Pete challenges our very confidence in our ideas of God, pointing us away from the heresy of orthodoxy, and toward orthodox heresy.

an elegant little gem...

This book is an absolute delight. Not at all a simple reference book filled with historical information, it rather reads like a good smoke itself; the pages contemplative puffs that needn't be turned too quickly, but lingered in as their meaning wafts skyward.
...and though it certainly warrants rapt attention, you'll no doubt soon feel a welling desire for a nice pipe-ful out of doors.

A pipeful of what? Likely, the very "weeds" at you feet, and within the pages of "Smoke Plants", you'll discover yourself surrounded by an intriguing world of medicine wherever the ground grows green.

A wonderful, wonderful book.

HIGHLY DECEIVING!

This is by far the WORST book relating to wild plants that I have ever read. From the title, one would expect that between the covers there was mostly information on smoke plants. Not so. In fact, the "150 smoke plants" section only takes up about 20 pages in the entire book, each plant simply being listed, without description of plant or properties (let alone her personal discovery of them), and sometimes which part to use.
Her guide to the 50 smoke plants that she does go over is shoddy at best. A paragraph total on each, scantily spread between description, preparation, and properties. Hardly any information here. Again, just a small fraction of the book.
As for the recipes, the same ones are easily attainable with an internet search.
The ENTIRE rest of the book is a compilation of quotes from other books, each taking up an entire page (even if it is just a one-line quote), and a couple of poorly told, unrelated personal stories which seem to be randomly spread throughout the book.
In summary, do yourself a favor, and search elsewhere for information on smoke plants, because it just isn't here.

Picture this: A thousand books on smoke plants stored in a room rigged with dynamite. The books explode and along comes M.R. Ross who selects one square foot of the mess and tapes the pages together, making sure to keep the order. She slaps a pretty picture on the front and a title, "Smoke Plants of North America," makes copies, and sells this pile of trash for [...] bucks a pop.

It honestly felt like reading a scrapbook that a 4-year-old had put together as a joke without any thought or reason. Definitely not worth the paper it was printed on.

About the Author
Susan Cummins Miller worked as a field geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey and taught geology and oceanography before turning to writing. She is a research affiliate and SIROW Scholar with the University of Arizona’s Southwest Institute for Research on Women, and the editor of A Sweet, Separate Intimacy: Women Writers of the American Frontier, 1800–1922 (TTUP). Hoodoo is her fourth Frankie MacFarlane mystery.

Keep on Digging, Frankie!

Fascinating desert tales...I am really enjoying the blend of geology and mystery. Frankie has grown so much from a student searching for answers in book 1 to a professional PROVIDING the answers in book three. I hope she keeps them coming!

A Gem in the Quarry

Miller's mystery novel is thrilling and engaging--the perfect book for a fun read. Frankie, the main character, centers the book and is eminently likeable--an important factor for me. She is funny and smart and enterprising. The western setting is amazingly realistic and the geology is not too heavy-handed. It added an interesting dimension as did the inner-workings of a University science department. I highly recommend!

This time we went to California along the coast, old stomping grounds for me. This time Frankie is in love and a fianc�. She kicks butt right along with her two hunky male cohorts. I can't wait to see what happens next!
