It touched my heart...

I started reading this book and had to finish it the same evening. It is written so honestly regarding every aspect of Dawn's life and love for her son James. It is a must read for parents with a handicapped child as there is advice on everything from dealing with medical issues to practical tips about planning a Children's Wish trip. But this book is more than a support book (although it is that). It is a book we as people without handicapped children need to read to learn how to reach out and start a dialogue and create relationships with parents of handicapped children and their families. It touched my heart and changed how I think about reaching out to people--all people!

Dawn does an amazing job of writing in a way that is personal and relatable, even to those who have not had the honour of caring for a person with special needs. I have had the privilege of watching James a few times and I have experienced his contagious joy. He is a special boy and part of a special family. I encourage you to take the time to read this book written straight from the heart. It is so real and so beautiful.

Insomnia Cure...terribly dense and obtuse!

I'm using this book for a graduate course as a student. I've worked in field of IT for 25+ years, so I'm no newbie. This book takes topics that are straightforward and makes them extremely complex and theoretical. The liner notes indicate it was translated into English, which would explain some of the awkward phrasing. You'll read a passage, re-read it again and if you do figure out what they are saying you are left to wonder, "why would you say it that way?" Answer, because it was translated! Strange wording, run on sentences, overly theoretical...can you tell I don't like this book!

Other reviewer was correct that it reads like a run -on journal article, replete with citations and examples...most of which do not help.

Avoid it if you can, but if you must use it, find other sources to help explain the concepts and take comfort in fact that in the real world of IT, it's not this hard! If you are new to the field, hang in there, don't let this book scare you off!

I would not recommend using this text.

I am using this textbook for a class this semester. This text is not reader friendly. Just because the topic is complex does not have to mean the book as to be hard to consume. This book is horribly dense. The images of models are seldom explained. My class hates this book. The book reads like journal articles pasted together to get enough information for a book and I sincerely regret the purchase. You will find yourself reading the same sentence over and over again with still little understanding of the intent of the author. The book throws around terms that it assumes the reader should be familiar with...but then if you were familiar with the terms, you wouldn't need their book. It is a really awful book. I will keep looking. If you were unfortunate enough to pick up this book because your teacher was looking for a text on data warehousing, you have my sympathies. Here are some tips. 1) Use other sources of information to supplement the text. The text alone is useless. 2) Read it early in the morning. The book is really capable of putting you to sleep at any time after 12Noon. 3) Find a data warehousing guru to decipher the examples. Put him on speed dial though. You'll need him after every page. For educators, there are no author's resources except a hard to find manual. You are on your own. You have been warned.

not a significant upgrade

Except for the chapter by Stu Bergman, almost nothing has changed from the previous edition. The previous edition was good but there is essentially no updating. I could not locate any reference to BRONJ- a huge oversight. SAVE YOUR MONEY if you have the 2nd ed. Otherwise, it's still okay.

Not For Private Practitioners

This manual is really written for hospital staff, students and practitioners who often handle medically compromised dental patients. There is plenty of details on health screening and tests to perform prior to surgery. For practitioners whose patients are mostly healthy, this book wouldn't be too helpful.

However, there are some chapters on implant surgery and other surgical tips, but these are too brief and far more information can be found in more specialised titles.

Good in Every Aspect

There are three things that are really good about this book: 1) it really opens your eyes to the fact that the web page designer/developer has absolutely no final control over the page layout, presentation or behavior, 2) it presents a good feel for the range of things you can do with JavaScript to alter a web page or bend it to your will, and 3) the source code, which is printed for each hack, provides some of the best study material in coding style, best practices, etc.

Highly recommended for intermediate to advanced JavaScripters. Heck, it's probably even good for beginners, since this type of stuff might get someone really interested in programming by sticking their toe in the water.

I'll never view the browser experience the same again...

Bottom line... I'm hooked. I was vaguely aware of what Greasemonkey was, but I really hadn't taken the time to explore it. That time is now over. I had a chance to review a copy of Greasemonkey Hacks by Mark Pilgrim, and I don't think I'll look at web browsing the same again.

This is a typical O'Reilly Hacks title, where you have 100 tips and tricks on exploiting some technology or toy. In this volume, Mark Pilgrim shows how you can use the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox to completely change the way you interact with web pages. The first two tips show how to install Greasemonkey and how to install a Greasemonkey script that you either download or write yourself. From there, it's all over the board as far as what you can do with these script gems. Tired of dealing with URLs on a site that aren't clickable? Check out tip #13 (Turn Naked URLs into Hyperlinks). Want to have a web page refresh itself automatically every x minutes (even though they don't have a meta refresh tag)? Then go to tip #41 (Refresh Pages Automatically). And my favorite... Hate those web site registrations that force you to enter basic information every time just to see the content? Do you normally use BugMeNot to find an existing registration? Wish that all could be integrated and automated in your browser? Tip #84 - Bypass Annoying Site Registration. I can tell you that this one was the first Greasemonkey script I installed, and it's way cool...

This is really not a "how to code Greasemonkey scripts" book. You're dealing with JavaScript and the document object model, but Pilgrim and his group of contributors don't spend any time trying to teach you how to do all that. The book delivers the scripts already coded and tested, and you just have to install them. But that's not bad, and it works on a number of levels. If you've never used Greasemonkey, it's a great way to discover the power (as I did). And if you *are* a Greasemonkey user and/or developer, this will give you many new ideas on scripts you might want to write yourself. And since you can download the scripts from the O'Reilly site, you already have a solid base of code from which to start. Hard to beat that in terms of value...

Obviously, I like tech books and I read a lot. But not often do I run across a book that ends up changing the way I view the basic technology I touch every day. If I wasn't a Firefox user, this book would convince me to become one in short order. As a Firefox user, I'm now convinced that I can personalize and manipulate web sites and information in ways I never imaged. This is really a recommended read...

The Ins & Outs of Greasemonkey

Greasemonkey is an extension for the Mozilla Firefox web browser to give users tons of control over ANY web page that they visit. The idea behind Greasemonkey is simply that DHTML can be outputted in useful ways, to do thinks like control how all links on a web page are displayed to the user, make cosmetic changes (image control and such), and these are just the tip of the iceberg! Never before have users had the kind of control before that they get with the Firefox web browser and the Greasemonkey extension. If you want to learn how to hack your way around (and the word 'hack' is so true when it comes to this extension) and have fun doing things that you should just NOT be able to do, you have come to the right place! Mark Pilgrim's book is an entertaining, interesting, and easy to follow guide to getting the most out of this great add-on. It gets into the nuts and bolts of Greasemonkey and does everything as advertised and more!!

Great author, terrible publisher

For a work that approaches the $100 mark, this 2-vol. set is a bit of a disappointment for the serious student of the Ancient Near East. On the one hand, Amelie Kuhrt's scholarship is absolutely outstanding. In my hours spent on the Internet searching for ANE textbooks, nothing out there rivals Kuhrt's comprehensive scholarship, particularly her attention to primary sources. She is honest about what her discipline knows, but also about what it doesn't know (by the way, Van de Mieroop's survey of the ANE makes a nice companion volume to Kuhrt in its offering of alternatives to some of her views). On the other hand, however, the publisher has done a great disservice to Kuhrt's fine scholarship in its latest printing of the book. The copy I bought on Amazon was actually missing whole sections of pages (pp. 12-16 and 28-29, to be exact), not to not mention a regularly recurring host of typographical errors throughout. Shame on Routledge for so carelessly printing a scholar's work that, in this case, certainly has no readily identifiable peers.

A good overview with some drawbacks

This is one of the best "comprehensive" introductions to the Ancient Near East (ANE), which attempts to cover all the major civilizations from Egypt through the fertile crescent to ancient Persia. Given the breadth of the subject matter, she does a fine job. As earlier reviewers point out certain subjects (especially Egypt, which you can supplement with Grimal A History of Ancient Egypt, for instance) are somewhat skimpy, while others receive a reasonably good treatment. Kuhrt is especially good at interacting with the textual sources, which she always treats with scholarly detachment.

There are, however, two major flaws with this 2-volume work. The maps are absolutely ATROCIOUS. A number of them are so poorly reprinted (from whichever sources they were originally taken) that they are nearly illegible; moreover, they rarely point out the places or geographical regions under discussion. I would have expected the publisher either to locate better maps or to draw up a new set of maps. Much cheaper books have managed to do so.

The other flaw, in my estimation, is the actual publishing. The binding of this paperback is not nearly strong enough. Every copy I have ever seen of it (and it was a textbook in one of my classes) has developed a serious spine crack--even under the gentlest of use. Moreover, the paper used is the heavy, shiny, plastic-like paper often used for photographic plates. If the book were full color, I might understand the use of such paper, but since it is black-and-white I personally do not understand the choice of the publisher. Not only is the book disproportionately heavy, but one has to be extremely careful of lighting conditions when reading it in order to avoid glare on the text.

If your interest in the ANE is merely a passing curiosity, I agree with a former reviewer that this book is not for you. Nevertheless, it is a very useful introduction for those who are seriously contemplating scholarship in the ANE.

Not a book for everyone

This comprehensive, 2-volume book about the Ancient Near East clearly has some outstanding points in its favor, but sadly also several serious drawbacks.
On the upside, there is not too much more you would want to know about the history of Anatolia or Mesopotamia in the timeframe covered, unless you are upper division college student in history or archeology. The book gives a painstaking account of all major sources, has an outstanding bibliography, and the author certainly went to great lengths to portray pro's and con's of various interpretations to points of contentions regarding the interpretation of historic evidence in general, and in particular while discussing specific sites, possible historical outlines of a region etc.
Be advised though, that the coverage of areas like Egypt, Eastern Iran or Afghanistan, to name a few, is by far not as substantial as that of the other two.
If, on the other hand, you are not a student in aforementioned subjects, or at least a very interested layperson with a previous solid foundation in the science, and simply want an overview of the regional history, this is not your book.
Among several things that will be unsatisfying for you are her endless enumeration of sources (incredibly boring, unless you actually have access to those), a constant jumping from region to region, which makes sense on the one hand, but is not exactly enhancing the readability for the casual reader.
Another very unsatisfying aspect, and maybe even one of the worst parts of the book, while having the general reader in mind at this point, but also to some extend to the more informed reader, are the maps. While there are quite a number of them, their quality is, to put it mildly, pitiful. Many don't name the real points of interest (as for example it would be nice to have the maps actually show the sites she discusses in the text that refers to them), they never show any regional boundaries, as to make clear for example where, when, who was in charge of what territory. Also don't hope for anything like a timeline, or other features that will help the lay reader to follow more easily the course of her presentation.
To sum it up, a book with good use for the serious student of the subject, while only of limited, if any, interest for the layperson.

Dr. Colin Swatridge is an A Level Chief Examiner in the UK, a visiting senior lecturer at four universities in Eastern/Central Europe, and he was a tutor for the Open University for 15 years. He has taught critical thinking for some years to Erasmus students from all over Europe.

Good for the care and feeding of your brain cells

This is one of the few practical texts on critical thinking which does not get bogged down with the formulaic preoccupations of philosophy and so is accessible for undergraduate university students in other disciplines and for readers in general. The quest to find a critical thinking text of this nature is long and difficult, as I know in looking for a book for my own students in journalism. The only other comparable critical thinking text, though quite different and somewhat idiosyncratic, is Critical Thinking by Richard W. Paul and his wife Linda Elder. The Paul and Elder text is much more thorough and lengthy, but it is this extensiveness, as well as its complexity, that make it impractical to use with students. The Swatridge guide is therefore a better choice for undergraduates and general readers. The Swatridge text has its own sly Socratic flavour because it teases the reader into thought rather than simply dominating the reader with pronouncements. In other words, the text tries to stimulate critical thinking in the reading of the text rather than just passive understanding. The British background of the author is also a welcome break from the dominance of United States texts with their strong U.S. national focus. Where both Swatridge and Paul fall short is the applicability of their approach to critical thinking, which is my focus in trying to help my own students. It seems that critical thinking has become a kind of academic knowledge through the education system, instead of a behaviour of mind and personality. I remember the moment of sitting as a guest in the philosophy class of a fellow faculty member and hearing him tell students that he could not be expected to internalize in himself what he was teaching in the course. In any event, among the forest of texts in critical thinking that take the reader deeper into the preoccupations of the discipline of philosophy and farther away from practical applications, the Swatridge text is a good first choice, followed by Paul and Elder for deeper submersion. The moderate length of the Swatridge text and the relative shortness of the chapters are nicely geared to the pacing of reading. The general reader who is sincerely interested in grappling with critical thinking will probably find this book a good choice. Read this book to stimulate your brain cells the way they want to be stimulated.
